Volleyball Tops Iona in Four Sets

Sophomore Lauren Hubert and graduate student Sofia Hedqvist each tallied a team-best 12 kills as Canisius topped Iona in MAAC volleyball action on Sunday afternoon at the Koessler Athletic Center.
 
With the four-set win, their eighth win in the last ten matches, the Golden Griffins improved to 14-11 overall and 10-4 in the MAAC. Iona, meanwhile, dropped to 8-18 on the season and 6-8 in MAAC play with the loss.

Hedqvist added a career-high five service aces in the victory while teammate Kalia Reisma totaled five blocks on the afternoon.
 
For Iona, Grace Ehler registered 12 kills while Emma Vu chipped in a match-best 22 assists in the losing effort.
 
Canisius capitalized with five service aces in the first set to cruise to a 25-17 win. Hedqvist notched three straight aces in a 15-3 run to give Canisius a 21-11 lead. Two service aces drew the Gaels closer, but a kill from Hedqvist closed the door to take the first set.
 
After a back-and-forth start to the second set, the Griffs used a 6-0 run to take a 20-13 advantage over the Gaels. A 3-0 run moments later ended the set and secured the victory for Canisius, 25-16.
 
Facing a 2-0 deficit, the Gaels responded the take the third set, 25-19. Trailing by six, 22-16, the Griffs pieced together a 3-0 run to cut the deficit to three late, however, Iona responded with a 3-0 run of their own to close out the frame.
 
In the fourth set, a 6-1 run from Canisius put the Griffs in front midway through the set. With an 18-13 advantage, Canisius took eight of the final 10 points to claim the set by a double-digit margin, 25-15, and secure the match.

POSTGAME COMMENTS 

MATCH NOTES

• The last time that Canisius won 10 conference matches was the 2022 season.
• The Griffs held the Gaels to a .056 hitting efficiency which is the lowest opponent attack percentage since the Blue and Gold held Manhattan to a .029 clip on Sept. 23, 2023.
• Sunday's match honored all six seniors on the team in Sofia Hedqvist, Niccola Bozzzini, Jillian Hanna, Emma Mans, Alexa Albinson and Kara Zaucha.
 
UP NEXT
Canisius embarks on a four-match road trip to end the season, starting with the Fairfield, who holds a perfect 14-0 record in conference play. The match is slated for a 1 p.m. start on Nov. 9 at Leo D. Mahoney Arena in Fairfield, Conn. The contest will be streamed on ESPN+.
