Hockey Plays to 3-3 Draw at Mercyhurst

Canisius used goals from three different players to record a 3-3 tie versus Mercyhurst in Atlantic Hockey America action Saturday at the Mercyhurst Ice Center in Erie, Pa.

Sophomores Matteo Giampa, Trey Funk and Jackson Nieuwendyk scored the three Golden Griffins (4-8-1, 4-2-1 AHA) goals. Freshman Petter Wickström Stumer made 17 saves between the pipes for Canisius.

Tyler DesRochers, Tyler Nasca and Dustin Geregach all found the back of the net for the Lakers (2-13-1, 2-9-1 AHA), who picked up the extra point as it won the best-of-three shootout, 2-0. Carter McPhail finished with 31 saves in goal for Mercyhurst.

Giampa opened the scoring just 5:56 into the contest, burying a rebound from the bottom of the left face-off circle for his second goal of the weekend.

Funk doubled the Canisius cushion with a power-play goal at the 16:33 mark of the first, sliding home a rebound from the end boards after junior Oliver Tarr's initial attempt went wide.

DesRochers got Mercyhurst on the board less than two minutes into the second period when his slap shot from the left point found its way through traffic and past the glove of Wickström Stumer for his third of the campaign.

Nieuwendyk restored the Griffs' two-goal lead at the 6:46 mark of the second period with a shorthanded tally, converting on a breakaway opportunity to put Canisius up, 3-1.

Nasca pulled the Lakers within one for a second time in the middle frame, firing a shot past the glove of Wickström Stumer from the slot to trim the Griffs advantage to 3-2 heading into the third.

Geregach brought Mercyhurst level with less than four minutes to play in the third, wiring a wrist shot past the blocker of Wickström Stumer while on the rush to knot the score at 3-3.

After neither team was able to find the back of the net during the 3-on-3 overtime session, the game went to a shootout. Mercyhurst converted on each of its first two opportunities in the shootout while Canisius was unsuccessful in both of its tries, giving the Lakers the extra point.
