Game Recap: Ice Hockey |

Hockey Outlasts RIT on Tuesday

Senior Alton McDermott tallied two goals in a 22-second span, including the game-winner, early in the third period to propel Canisius to a 6-4 victory over RIT in Atlantic Hockey America action Tuesday at the Gene Polisseni Center in Rochester, N.Y.

McDermott was one of three Golden Griffins (5-8-1, 5-2-1 AHA) to record multiple points as graduate student Kyle Haskins and junior Kash Rasmussen notched a goal and an assist each. Graduate student Mikey Colella and junior Stefano Bottini accounted for the other two Canisius tallies. Freshman goaltender Ben Bonisteel recorded 29 saves between the pipes as he picked up his first collegiate victory.

Matthew Wilde and Tristan Allen notched a goal and an assist for the Tigers (3-13-1, 2-7-1 AHA). Simon Isabelle and Phillipe Jacques accounted for the other two RIT goals. Jakub Krbecek notched 19 saves in goal for the home team.

Rasmussen opened the scoring with a power-play goal at the 7:28 mark of the first period, burying a rebound past Krbecek for his second goal of the season.
Colella doubled the Griffs advantage with just over four minutes to play in the opening frame when he finished off a Canisius rush by putting a loose puck into the Tigers goal to make it a 2-0 contest.   RIT got on the board just 3:30 into the second period when Jacques redirected a point shot over the glove of Bonisteel from close range to pull the Tigers within one.

Bottini restored Canisius' two-goal lead just before the midway point of the contest, wiring a wrist shot over the glove of Krbecek from the left face-off circle to extend the Griffs lead to 3-1.
Wilde pulled RIT within one once again at the 13:05 mark of the second, beating Bonisteel with a wrist shot to the blocker side for his sixth goal of the season.

McDermott scored twice on the same shift in the third minute of the third to stretch the Griffs advantage to 5-2. His first of the contest came at the 2:32 mark of the frame when he backhanded a loose puck over an outstretched Krbecek before he tallied his second of the game moments later, sliding a centering feed from graduate student Cole Kodsi past Krbreck to make it a 5-2 contest.
A power-play goal by Allen less than two minutes after McDermott's tallies pulled RIT within two, but a redirection by Haskins just 27 seconds later restored Canisius' three-goal cushion. Isabelle found the back of the net with 1:32 remaining to make it a two-goal contest, but the Griffs held RIT off the scoreboard the rest of the way to preserve the two-goal victory.
