Women’s Basketball Falls to Buffalo

All five starters for Buffalo recorded double-figures in the scoring column, led by Chellia Watson's 12 points, as the visiting Bulls defeated Canisius 62-50 in non-conference collegiate women's basketball action at the Koessler Athletic Center in Buffalo, N.Y., Friday night.

The Golden Griffins fell to 1-4 with the loss, while the Bulls improved to  5-0 on the 2024-25 season.

POSTGAME COMMENTS FROM HEAD COACH TIFFANY SWOFFARD

The Griffs were led by their point guard, graduate student Jaela Johnson, who recorded a game-high 14 points while also dishing out five assists. Sophomore Mary Copple provided excellent minutes off the bench for the Griffs, scoring a career-high eight points and while tallying a block and a steal in the contest. Sophomore Shariah Galies was again strong on the glass, snatching a game-high 10 rebounds.

The cross-town rivals came out of the gate with serious intensity, each team holding the other under 30 points in the first half. Canisius took a first quarter lead, going up 13-10 after holding the Bulls 21.1 percent from the field, while shooting 50.0 percent from the floor on its offensive end. Gailes racked up five of her 10 rebounds in the first 10:00 of the game.

Buffalo battled back in the second quarter, holding the Griffs to 10 points to take a 25-23 lead going into the halftime break. Once out of the locker room, Buffalo began firing on all cylinders, using a 14-2 run powered by 11 Canisius turnovers. After the media timeout, Canisius collected settled down and scored five points to end the quarter trailing 45-30.

The Griffs made their run in the fourth quarter, cutting the deficit to 10 with 1:00 remaining, outscoring the Bulls 20-17 after shooting 43.8 percent from the field for the quarter. The rally was not enough, however, as the Griffs fell at home for the second time this season.

GAME NOTES
• This was the 48th meeting between the Big Four rivals with Canisius holding a 29-19 edge in the series. Buffalo has won 10 of the last 11 games.
