Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Women’s Basketball Takes Loss to Binghamton

Graduate student Jaela Johnson's game-high 19 points were not enough as Binghamton defeated Canisius by a 68-58 margin in non-conference collegiate women's basketball Monday at the Koessler Athletic Center in Buffalo, N.Y.

Playing in front of a capacity crowd on Kid's Day, the Golden Griffins slid to 1-5 in their non-conference schedule. The Bearcats improved to 4-3 overall with the victory.

Johnson led all scorers her 19 points, highlighted by a 5-of-12 effort from 3-point range, while also recording three steals and securing four rebounds. She was aided by sophomore Shariah Gailes, who provided a 12-point, 11-rebound double-double off the bench and junior Franka Wittenberg's nine points and eight assists.

After trailing early in the first quarter, the Bearcats established control offensively as it used an 11-4 run to close out the opening period while holding the Griffs to just nine points to build a lead that they did not relinquish for the rest of the game.

Yanniah Boyd and Leah Middleton led the way for the visiting team, each scoring 12 points and going a combined 4-for-7 from beyond the three-point line. The Griffs cut the deficit to 25-21 with 3:21 remaining in the second quarter, but Binghamton went on a 7-2 run to close out the half and take a 32-23 advantage into the locker room.

After the Bearcats expanded their lead to double-digits at the end of the third quarter, Johnson and Gailes combined to score 18 of the Griffs' 24 points in the fourth, but it was not enough as Binghamton held on to secure the 10-point victory.
