Giampa’s Final-Minute Goal Lifts Hockey Past Mercyhurst

Sophomore Matteo Giampa scored with 50 seconds to play in the third period to break a 2-2 tie and lift Canisius to a 3-2 victory over Mercyhurst in Atlantic Hockey America action Friday at the Mercyhurst Ice Center in Erie, Pa.

Giampa and graduate student Mikey Colella both tallied a goal and an assist while senior Matt Vermaeten notched the opening goal for the Golden Griffins (4-8-0, 4-2-0 AHA). Sophomore Ethan Robertson recorded 30 saves between the pipes for Canisius to earn his fourth victory of the season.

Dustin Gergach and Brendan Lamb accounted for the two goals for the Lakers (2-11-0, 2-9-0 AHA). Carter McPhail finished 32 saves in goal for Mercyhurst.

With the score tied in the final minute of regulation, Giampa put the Griffs in front for the first time all evening as he redirected freshman Carter Patterson's point shot between the legs of McPhail from the middle of the slot for his fourth goal of the season.

Earlier in the contest, Geregach opened the scoring in the final seconds of the first period, beating Robertson to the blocker side for his fifth goal of the season.

Vermaeten brought the Griffs level at the 16:55 mark of the second period, jamming home a loose puck during a goalmouth scramble for his third goal of the campaign.

Lamb put Mercyhurst back in front less than two minutes into the third period, stuffing a rebound under the left pad of Robertson to give the Lakers a 2-1 lead.

Colella tied the game for the second time just before the eight-minute mark of the third when he outraced McPhail to a loose puck in the Mercyhurst zone and slid it into the Lakers cage to knot the score at 2-2, setting the stage for Giampa's late-game heroics.
