Volleyball Rolls Past Manhattan

Sophomore Lauren Hubert recorded a team-best 10 kills to go with a .714 hitting efficiency to lead Canisius to a 3-0 sweep of Manhattan in MAAC volleyball action at the Koessler Athletic Center Saturday afternoon.
 
The Golden Griffins won the match with set scores of 25-21, 25-11, and 25-16 and improved to 13-11 overall and 9-4 in conference play. With the loss, the Jaspers, who have lost 16 straight, fell to 1-23 overall and 0-13 in league action.
 
Graduate student Sofia Hedqvist and senior Kara Zaucha each added nine kills to the winning cause for the Blue and Gold, which has now won three straight and seven of their last 10, dating back to Oct. 5. Junior Ella Bourque dished out a team-best 18 assists, while graduate student Niccola Bozzini chipped in 17 assists of her own.
 
For the Jaspers, Maike Bertens registered 12 kills on 24 attack attempts. As a team, Manhattan hit .114 on the day, while being charged with five block errors.
 
In the first set, Canisius forced a timeout from Manhattan with a service ace by Hubert that put the Griffs in front 12-6. Canisius maintained the lead for the remainder of the set as the team hit .375 in the opening frame. Junior Bella Mosquera finished off the 25-21 set-victory with a kill, one of her five kills on the day.
 
Canisius cruised to win the second set 25-11 thanks to three separate 4-0 runs, which included a 4-0 run to end the frame. Out of the match intermission, Manhattan jumped out to an early 5-2 lead before the Griffs answered with a 11-3 run to take a commanding 15-9 lead. Canisius closed out the match with a 9-3 run to take the set 25-16, and complete the sweep.
 
MATCH NOTES
• Saturday was the 56th all-time meeting between the two programs, Canisius leads the series 39-17.
• Canisius has swept Manhattan in each of the last six matches and in 10 of the last 12 meetings, dating back to the 2018 campaign.
• Saturday's win over the Jaspers extended Canisius' win streak in the series to 14 straight, dating back to 2017.
• Canisius' three-match win streak is the team's first since 2022. The team will also have a winning record at home for the first time since 2021.
• As a team, the Griffs hit .442 in the win, their best team hitting percentage in a three-set match since Oct. 20, 2018 when the Blue and Gold hit .467 in a win over Siena.

 
UP NEXT
Canisius will close out the home portion of its 2024 schedule on Sunday when the team plays host to Iona on Senior Day. The pre-match ceremony will begin at 11:45 a.m., with the match scheduled for noon. The ceremony and match will be streamed live on the Golden Griffins Broadcast Network.
