Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Men’s Basketball Falls on the Road to Maryland

Julian Reese scored a game-high 20 points and grabbed 12 rebounds to lead seven Maryland players in double-figures as the host Terrapins defeated Canisius 108-37 in non-conference action Tuesday night at XFINITY Center in College Park, Md.

Maryland improved to 4-1 on the year with the victory, while the Golden Griffins fell to 0-6.

Reese, a Preseason All-Big 10 selection and a member of the 2024-25 Karl Malone Award Watch List, ended the night by going 8-for-9 from the floor and 4-for-5 from the free-throw line en route to his 23rd career double-double performance. All five Maryland starters scored in double-figures in the victory, as the host Terps shot 54.2 percent from the field, made 9-of-31 (29.0 percent) chances from 3-point land and hit on 21-of-25 (84.0 percent) free-throw chances. Maryland also dominated on the glass, out-rebounding Canisius by a 54-24 clip, and the Terps turned 23 Canisius turnovers into 39 points on the night.

Canisius senior Tana Kopa and junior Paul McMillan IV led the Blue and Gold with 10 points, each. Six of Kopa's 10 points came on the power of two 3-point field goal makes, giving him 200 makes from long-range for his collegiate career. Junior Tyson Oghene and sophomore Anthony Benard added six points apiece in the loss for the Blue and Gold, who were credited with more steals (7) than assists (5) in the contest.

Canisius opened the game with the night's first basket, a 3-pointer by freshman Evan van der Plas 56 seconds into the game, to take an early 3-0 lead, but that advantage was short-lived, as the Terrapins scored 16 of the game's next 17 points to take a 16-4 lead just 3:37 into the contest. Maryland shot 56.4 percent from the floor in the game's opening 20 minutes and held a 59-14 lead at halftime.

HEAD COACH JIM CHRISTIAN'S POSTGAME COMMENTS
"We were physically drained, mentally drained and just tired from the travel and everything we have been going through. We have to bounce back. We have a game Saturday at home. We haven't played at home in what feels like forever. Our guys have to be excited to play."
