Golf Places Ninth at Matthews Auto Collegiate

Led by a pair of even-par 72s from sophomore Mikey Takacs and senior Ryan Edholm, the Canisius golf team finished in ninth place after the Golden Griffins closed out the final round of the the 2024 Matthews Auto Collegiate Invitational Monday evening at the Links at Hiawatha Landing Golf Course in Apalachin, N.Y.

Takacs finished the 36-hole tournament tied for 17th after he posted his fourth round at par or better in his last three tournaments, dating back to the Colonel Shootout in Richmond, Ky., Sept. 8. The Iowa City, Iowa native was one of six golfers in the field to finish one-over for the tournament after he carded a two-round score of 145 (73-72). Edholm's 72 on Monday moved him up the leaderboard by seven spots as he finished the event tied for 23rd with his score of 146 (74-72). Sophomores Alex Schickling and Jake Dantonio each shot a three-over 75 on Monday, and both golfers finished among the tournament's top-55 golfers.

Sacred Heart won the team title after the Pioneers posted a team score of 563, which was 13 strokes under par. Canisius' team score of 294 on Monday was six over par, as the Griffs closed out the event with a two-round tally of 590, which was three strokes back of St. Bonaventure, which placed eighth.

Canisius will close out the fall schedule Oct. 13-15 when the team travels to take part in the Bucknell Fall Invitational in Lewisburg, Pa.
