Second-Period Surge Sends St. Lawrence Past Hockey

St. Lawrence scored four goals in the second period to erase an early deficit and defeat Canisius, 5-2, in collegiate men's ice hockey action Sunday at Appleton Arena in Canton, N.Y.

Drake Burgin, Isaac Tremblay, Gunnar Thoreson and Ty Naaykens all scored during the second-period barrage for the Saints (2-0-0) while Burgin added his second of the contest late in the third to close out the scoring. Mason Kucenski made 26 saves between the pipes for SLU to pick up his second win of the young season.

Freshman Dominic Payne and junior Oliver Tarr accounted for the two goals for the Golden Griffins (0-2-0). Sophomore Ethan Robertson made his second start of the weekend and finished with 20 stops.

Trailing 2-0 at the start of the second period, Burgin got SLU on the board at the 3:44 mark of the middle frame with a power-play goal before Tremblay tied the game just past the midway point of the second when he deposited a rebound into the Canisius goal for his first collegiate tally.

Thoreson put the Saints in front less than four minutes after Tremblay's equalizer, beating Robertson with a wrist shot off the rush to give SLU a 3-2 lead.

Naaykens closed out the second-period salvo for the Saints, using a Canisius defenseman as a screen to wire a wrist shot past the glove of Robertson while SLU was shorthanded to double the Saints lead to 4-2 heading into the third.

Burgin closed out the scoring with under two minutes to play in the third period, placing a slap shot over left shoulder of Robertson from the left point to determine the three-goal margin of victory.

Earlier in the contest, Payne opened the scoring just 3:34 into the first period, beating Kucenski with a wrist shot from the right face-off circle during a Canisius zone entry.

Tarr doubled the Griffs advantage in the final minute of the opening frame as he created a turnover in the St. Lawrence zone before placing a shot under the glove of Kucenski for his first goal of the campaign, setting the stage for the Saints second-period surge.
