Hockey Falls to RPI in Home Opener

RPI used goals from six different players to defeat Canisius, 6-3, in collegiate men's ice hockey action Friday at LECOM Harborcenter in downtown Buffalo.

Jack Angew, Tyler Hotson, Elliot McDermott, John Beaton Rainers Rullers and Jagger Tapper all scored for the Engineers (1-0-0). McDermott and Tapper also recorded assists to finish with two-point nights.

Graduate students Kyle Haskins and Alec Cicero and junior Grant Porter accounted for the three goals for the Golden Griffins (0-3-0). Junior Oliver Tarr and sophomore Jack Budd finished with two assists each.

Agnew opened the scoring just past the midway point of the first period when his slapshot from the right point found its way past Canisius goaltender Ethan Robertson.

Haskins tied the game at 1-1 less than five minutes later, deflecting Tarr's point shot past Engineers netminder Jack Watson for his first of the campaign.
Cicero gave Canisius its only lead of the game 1:40 into the second period, putting home Tarr's cross-ice feed to stake the Griffs to a 2-1 advantage.   RPI retook the lead during the middle stages of the second as it scored twice in a 17-second span. Hotson tied the game with a 4-on-3 power-play goal at the 9:46 mark of the second before Elliott McDermott put the Engineers back in front on the next shift, beating Robertson to the blocker side from the middle of the slot for his first of the season.

Beaton doubled the RPI advantage in the final five minutes of the second, scoring on the rush to make it a 4-2 contest heading into the third.

Rullers expanded the Engineers cushion to three just before the midway point of the third, finishing off an odd-mash rush for his first collegiate tally.

The teams traded goals in the final minute. Tapper notched an empty-net goal for RPI while Porter countered with a power-play tally to determine the final three-goal margin.
Watson made 28 saves in goal for RPI. Robertson got the start for Canisius and made 12 saves over the first two periods before being replaced by freshman Ben Bonisteel at the start of the third. Bonisteel recorded 11 saves in his collegiate debut.
