Hockey Edged in Season Opener at Clarkson

Clarkson used goals from Talon Sigurdson and Ayrton Martino and a 24-save performance from Ethan Langenegger to post a 2-1 victory over Canisius in collegiate men's ice hockey action Saturday at Cheel Arena in Potsdam, N.Y.

In the season opener for both programs, Sigurdson staked the Golden Knights to a 1-0 lead at the 11:37 mark of the first period when he beat Golden Griffins netminder Ethan Robertson with a wrist shot inside the left post from the right face off circle while on the rush.

The teams traded goals during the second period. Ayrton Martino doubled the Clarkson advantage less than a minute into the middle frame as he finished off a 2-on-1 break with Ellis Rickwood.

Senior Alton McDermott pulled Canisius within one with 12:22 elapsed in the second, whacking home a loose puck from in front of the Golden Knights goal.

The Griffs pushed for the equalizer in the third period, but Langennegger turned aside all eight shots he faced to secure the one-goal victory for the Golden Knights in their debut under new head coch Jean-Francois Houle.

Robertson got the start in goal for Canisius and made 26 saves.
