Volleyball Swept by Quinnipiac

Quinnipiac's Elena Giacomini was credited with 16 kills, 15 digs and three service aces to lead the visiting Bobcats to a 3-0 win over Canisius in MAAC volleyball action Saturday afternoon at the Koessler Athletic Center.
 
With the win, Quinnipiac's sixth straight, the Bobcats improved to 11-11 overall and 8-2 in league play. The Golden Griffins fell to 10-11 overall and 6-4 in MAAC action after losing the match by set scores of 28-26, 25-11, 25-19.
 
Leilani-Kai Giusta added 11 kills, 13 digs and two service aces to the winning cause for Quinnipiac, which hit .250 as a team on the day. Yagmur Gunes chipped in nine kills and nine digs, while setter Damla Gunes was credited with a match-high 34 assists for Quinnipiac.
 
For Canisius, senior Kara Zaucha had a team-high six kills and junior Bella Mosquera recorded four kills and two block assists in the losing cause. Setter Ella Bourque had 15 of the Griffs' 18 assists in the match, and senior libero Jillian Hanna was good for a match-high 19 digs.
 
Trailing 26-25 in the first set, Zaucha put down one of her five kills in the opening frame to knot the set at 26-26. However, a kill by Giacomini and a set error by Canisius ended the first frame with Quinnipiac posting the 28-26 victory. In the second set, Giusta registered seven of Quinnipiac's 16 kills to lead the Bobcats to the 25-11 set victory and a 2-0 lead in the match.
 
Canisius trailed Quinnipiac 18-8 midway through the third frame, but the Griffs pushed back and got within three at 19-16 after the Blue and Gold scored eight of the set's next nine points. In that run, six of Canisius' eight points came off attack errors by Quinnipiac. Moments later, Canisius trailed 22-19, before Giusta had a kill and a service ace, and Yagum Gunes ended the contest with a kill, one of her seven kills in the final frame.
 
GAME NOTES
• Saturday marked the 29th all-time meeting between the two programs in volleyball. Canisius leads the series 17-12.
• The 3-0 loss on Saturday was the Griffs' first 3-0 defeat in league play this season.
• The first set featured 12 ties and five lead changes.
• Graduate student Alexa Albinson made her first appearance of the season and recorded two digs and a block assist.
 
UP NEXT
Canisius will continue its five-match homestand on Sunday when the team plays host to MAAC-newcomer Merrimack. The match will start at noon, and the contest will be broadcast live on ESPN+.
