Volleyball Posts Four-Set Win over Merrimack

Canisius sophomore Lauren Hubert recorded a match-high 17 kills and junior Bella Mosquera added 10 kills and three block assists to help lead the Golden Griffins to a 3-1 win over Merrimack in MAAC volleyball action Sunday afternoon at the Koessler Athletic Center.
 
Canisius won the match by set scores of 25-19, 25-9, 21-25, 25-22. The Griffs improved to 11-11 overall and 7-4 in league play with the victory, while the Warriors slipped to 6-16 overall and 5-6 in conference action.
 
Eleven of Hubert's 17 kills came in the first and fourth sets, as the Griffs scored their fifth win in their last seven outings with the four-set victory. Hubert also added six digs and two service aces to the winning cause for the Blue and Gold, which hit .316 on the day as a team, while holding Merrimack to a .133 team hitting percentage for the match. Mosquera's 10 kills in the win marked the third time this season she's had 10-or more kills in a MAAC match, and she extended her streak of matches with multiple block assists to 13, dating back to Sept. 20. Graduate student Sofia Hedqvist was credited with nine kills, while junior setter Ella Bourque earned a match-high 39 assists in the victory. Senior libero Jillian Hanna had a match-high 18 digs, while fellow senior Kara Zaucha added 12 digs in the Blue and Gold's win.
 
For Merrimack, Julz Carlat had a team-high 11 kills for the Warriors, while teammate McKenna Shotwell chipped in 10 kills, eight digs and two service aces.
 
Canisius jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the match after taking the first two sets by scores of 25-19 and 25-9. In the first set, Hubert was good for five of the Griffs' 14 kills, as Canisius hit .324 in the opening frame. In the second set, Canisius jumped out to an early 9-2 lead thanks to five-straight points, and never looked back. In that second set, the Griffs recorded six service aces and held Merrimack to a -.280 team hitting percentage.
 
Out of the intermission, Merrimack battled back and won the third set 25-21 thanks to five kills from Carlat and three service aces from Sophia DeBonis. In the fourth set, the Warriors held a 14-7 lead midway through the frame before Canisius ripped off five-straight points to make the score 14-12 in favor of the visiting team. Another 4-0 scoring surge by Canisius moments later got the Griffs tied the set at 17-17, but Merrimack scored four of the set's next six points to take a 21-19 advantage. Trailing 22-21 late in the set, Canisius scored the contest's final four points, with two kills from Hubert and a service ace by Bourque, to seal the victory for the home team.
 
GAME NOTES
• Sunday marked the first meeting between Canisius and Merrimack in volleyball. Merrimack joined the MAAC prior to the start of the 2024-25 academic year.
• Canisius improved to 5-2 this season in four-set matches with the victory.
• Hubert has recorded 15-or more kills in seven of Canisius' 11 MAAC matches this season.
• Bourque has been credited with 35-or more assists in 11 matches this season. Her 2,460 career assists leaves her 40 shy of becoming the sixth player in program history to dish out 2,500-or more assists in her career.
• Mosquera's three block assists Sunday gives her 76 on the season, which is three more block assists than she collected through the entire 2023 campaign.
• Hanna's 18 digs on Sunday gives her 392 on the season, which matches her total for the 2023 season.
• The win on Sunday marked the 130th career MAAC victory for Canisius head coach Tom Hanna. Hanna has now won 26 MAAC contests in his two-plus seasons at Canisius, and he registered 104 MAAC victories in 10 seasons as the head coach at Marist.
 
UP NEXT
Canisius will continue its five-match homestand on Oct. 30 when the team plays host to long-time rival Niagara at the Koessler Athletic Center. The contest will start at 6 p.m., and will be broadcast live on ESPN+. Wednesday's match will also be Canisius' "Dig Pink" match to support breast cancer awareness through the Side Out Foundation.
