Petrucci’s Game Winning Goal Edges Out Mount St. Mary’s

Second-half goals from sophomore Mason Petrucci and junior Josh Miller lifted Canisius to a 2-1 comeback victory over Mount St. Mary's Saturday in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference men's soccer action at the Demske Sports Complex.

The Golden Griffins (3-8-3, 1-3-2 MAAC) knocked off the second-place Mountaineers to increase their conference point total to five on the season, putting them in a tie for eighth place with Fairfield in the MAAC standings. The Mount, meanwhile, slid to 3-8-3 overall and 3-1-1 in conference play with the setback.

The Mountaineers controlled the majority of the first half, putting up 11 shots to Canisius' three. Senior goalkeeper Jack Petrie made three stops in the game, with all three saves coming in the first half. The Mount found the back of the net in the 29th minute as Graham Dougald tapped home a rebound to give the visitors the 1-0 lead.

The Griffs went on the offensive in the second half, putting up seven shots in the period. Canisius tied the game in the 59th minute when junior Michael Switala corralled a loose ball in the Mountaineers box and sent a strike towards the net. The shot deflected off the goalkeeper right to the awaiting feet of Miller, who hammered home the goal.

Canisius took the lead in the 70th minute as the Griffs earned a corner kick. Petrucci was tasked with delivering the cross and succeeded, bending the ball right into the net from the corner to give the Griffs a 2-1 lead.

Leading with 20 minutes remaining in the game, Canisius held off the Mountaineer attack for the conclusion of the game. The Griffs also had a pair of chances on the offensive end in final minutes as senior Ely Sidibe and junior Glodie Mata both put up strong shots on target that were stifled by the Mountaineer defense.
