Game Recap: Ice Hockey |

Hockey Unable to Keep Pace with No. 4 Michigan State

No. 4 Michigan State scored three goals in the second period to break open a scoreless contest on its way to a 4-1 victory over Canisius in collegiate men's ice hockey action Friday at LECOM Harborcenter in downtown Buffalo.

Tanner Kelly and Joey Larson finished with a goal and an assist each for the visiting Spartans (5-1-0), who completed a sweep of the weekend series with Saturday's victory. Isaac Howard and Red Savage also scored for MSU while Maxim Strbak finished the evening with two assists.

Freshman Dominic Payne accounted for the lone tally for the Golden Griffins (1-6-0) with a power-play tally in the second period. Freshman Petter Wickström Stumer made his first career start in goal for Canisius and responded with 42 saves.

After neither team was able to get on the scoreboard in the first, Tanner gave MSU a 1-0 lead in the opening minute of the second when he fired a wrist shot over the right shoulder of Wickström Stumer for his second goal of the weekend.

Payne knotted the score at 1-1 with a power-play tally just past the six-minute mark of the middle frame, wiring a puck past Spartans netminder Luca DiPasquo from the top of the right face-off circle for his second goal of the season.
MSU regained the lead less than two minutes after Payne's equalizer with a power-play goal of its own as Larson beat Wickström Stumer with a one-timer from the left point to put the Spartans back in front, 2-1.

Savage extended the Spartans advantage to 3-1 with 10:51 played in the second, redirecting Larson's shot attempt into the Canisius goal from close range.

Howard provided the insurance marker for MSU just 3:25 into the third, finishing off a 2-on-1 rush with Daniel Russell for his fourth goal of the season.

• The Spartans were 1-for-6 on the power play while Canisius was 1-for-4 with the man advantage.
• Canisius recorded a season-high 26 blocked shots during Saturday's contest. Sophomore Jack Budd led the Griffs with six blocks.
