Game Recap: Ice Hockey |

Hockey Bested by No. 4 Michigan State in Series Opener Friday

Tanner Kelly scored the game-winning goal and added an assist while Trey Augustine stopped all 15 shots he faced to lead No. 4 Michigan State to a 3-0 victory over Canisius in collegiate men's ice hockey action Friday at LECOM Harborcenter in downtown Buffalo.

Joey Larson and Daniel Russell also scored for the Spartans (4-1-0) while Shane Vansaghi dished out a pair of assists.

Sophomore netminder Ethan Robertson recorded 32 saves between the pipes for the Golden Griffins (1-5-0).

After a scoreless first period, Kelly opened the scoring just past the midway point of the second period, beating Robertson with a shot over the left shoulder for his first of the campaign.

The Spartans put the game out of reach with a pair of power-play goals just 18 seconds apart during a major penalty late in the third.

Larson doubled the MSU edge with his second of the campaign at the 17:36 mark of the third, sneaking a wrist shot over the right pad of Robertson from the left face-off circle. Russell closed out the scoring moments later, depositing Charlie Stramel's centering feed between the legs of Robertson from the bottom of the slot to determine the final three-goal margin.

Canisius' best chance to get on the scoreboard came in the second period as sophomore Matteo Giampa found himself on a shorthanded breakaway, but Augustine was able to stretch out his right leg and make the save to keep the Griffs off the scoreboard.
