Women’s Basketball Victorious Over Lock Haven in Exhibition

Canisius used a 23-9 run in the third quarter to take control of the contest and defeat Lock Haven, 66-59, Thursday in collegiate women's basketball exhibition action at the Koessler Athletic Center in Buffalo, N.Y.

Graduate guard Cory Santoro and sophomore forward Shariah Gailes led the Golden Griffins in scoring with 16 points each. Gailes also grabbed a game-high 16 rebounds while Santoro went 4-for-7 from 3-point land as she shot 62.5 percent from the field. Graduate guard Jaela Johnson chipped in 14 points of her own while also dishing out six assists. The Griffs as a whole held a .462 shooting percentage, shooting 41.2 percent from deep.

Lock Haven's Rhlyn Rouse led the Bald Eagles in scoring with 16 points, 14 of which came in the first half. The Bald Eagles finished the game shooting 35.4 percent from the field and just 20.0 percent from 3-point range.

Santoro set the tone for the Griffs early in the first quarter, hitting a long distance two-pointer and a three to score the first five points of the game. Despite Canisius taking an early 7-2 lead, the Bald Eagles went on a 23-13 run from the 2:13 mark of the first quarter to the halftime break to lead the Griffs, 35-24.

The second half proved more fruitful for the Griffs shooters as Santoro, Johnson and sophomore Mary Copple went 6-for-8 from distance after the break. Lock Haven simultaneously went cold from the 3-point line, shooting a frigid 2-for-14 from beyond the arc in the second half, allowing Canisius to retake the lead on a Santoro three with 16 seconds left in the third quarter. Gailes also contributed 10 points in the paint and at the free-throw line in the second half to secure the 66-59 win.
