Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Women’s Basketball Suffers Setback at Pitt

Graduate student Khadija Faye recorded 27 points and 12 rebounds to lead Pitt to a 78-36 victory over Canisius Tuesday in non-conference women's basketball action at Petersen Event Center in Pittsburgh, Pa.

In the season opener for both programs, Faye was one of three Panthers to reach double figures as Amiya Jenkins chipped in 11 points and Aislin Malcom pitched in 10.

Senior Sara Carvajal Caro and sophomore Shariah Gailes led the Golden Griffins in scoring with eight points apiece as they played their first power conference opponent in a season opener since the 2007-08 season when they opened at No.18 West Virginia. Freshman Irene Rey Pineda chipped in six points in her collegiate debut while fellow rookie Yasmine Djibril also notched five points to open her collegiate career.

The Griffs hung with the Panthers in the opening quarter after going down 6-0. Gailes and Djibril each made driving lay-ups to cut the lead down to two points at the 6:50 mark of the first quarter. From there, the Panthers went on a 21-4 run to close out the quarter and build a commanding cushion they would maintain throughout the remainder of the contest.

The Panthers capitalized on turnovers, generating 35 throughout the game, resulting in 39 points. The Griffs also faced a deficit on the glass and were out-rebounded 43-27, highlighted by a 17-3 offensive rebounding margin. Overall, Canisius shot 33.3 (28-of-64) percent from the field and just 7.7 percent (2-of-13) from beyond the arc.
