Volleyball Sweeps Manhattan

Senior Kara Zaucha recorded 12 kills on 23 swings while junior Ella Bourque added 22 assists and three service aces to help lead Canisius to a 3-0 (25-21, 25-14, 25-20) sweep over Manhattan in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference volleyball action Sunday at Draddy Gymnasium in Riverdale, N.Y.

With the victory, the Golden Griffins improved to 10-10 on the season with a 6-3 MAAC record. The Jaspers, meanwhile, dropped to 1-18 overall and 0-9 in league play.

Zaucha posted a .500 hitting percentage to go along with three digs and five block assists in the winning effort. Bourque was good for a match-high 22 assists while the trio of sophomore Lauren Hubert, graduate Sophia Hedqvist and freshman Hannah Kos accounted for seven kills each.

Maike Bertens notched team-highs of 10 kills and 11 digs to pace Manhattan. Sarah Emmons pitched in 18 assists and a team-best three service aces while Lizzy Kovach finished with 11 digs. 

Canisius hit .256 as a team, while holding Manhattan to a .113 team attack percentage for the contest.

The Griffs got off to a hot start, jumping out to a 9-3 lead in the first set. Manhattan was able to bring the score within one point later in the set, battling back to a 18-17 score before Canisius outscored the Jaspers by a 7-4 margin to close out the set, 25-21.

The second set was dominated by the Griffs, who overcame a 4-0 start by the Jaspers by closing out the set on a 25-10 run. The Griffs held Manhattan to a .000 hitting percentage and had seven blocks, four aces and a .270 hitting percentage.

Canisius closed out the match with a 25-20 win in the third set, facing their toughest challenge of the match as Manhattan looked to avoid the sweep. The Jaspers took their first lead since the beginning of the second set in the final frames, 19-18, before the Griffs closed out the game with a 7-1 run to earn the win.

GAME NOTES
• Kos totaled the highest hitting percentage of her rookie season, hitting a team-high .600 (7-for-10, one attack error).
• Zaucha tallied her ninth straight match with double-digit kills. She has gone over the single-digit threshold in 15 of the Griffs' 20 matches this season.
• Canisius put up their highest blocking totals of the season, recording 24 block assists and 14 total blocks in today's contest.
• Senior Libero Jillian Hanna recorded a game-high 15 digs, her eighth straight game with more than 10 digs.
• Sophomore Kalia Reisma matched her career high with eight total blocks on Sunday, matching her total against Duquesne on Sept. 1, 2023. 

UP NEXT
The Griffs open a five-match homestand Oct. 26 when they welcome MAAC foe Quinnipiac to the Koessler Athletic Center. Start time for the match is slated for noon.
