Volleyball Posts Road Win Over Iona

Three Canisius players recorded double-digit kills, led by senior Kara Zaucha and her match-high 16, and junior setter Ella Bourque put down a career-high seven kills to go with 38 assists, nine digs and a service ace as the Golden Griffins defeated Iona 3-1 in MAAC volleyball action Saturday afternoon in New Rochelle, N.Y.
 
Canisius won the match by set scores of 25-19, 25-23, 21-25, 25-19. With the victory, the Griffs' third in their last four outings, the Blue and Gold improved to 9-10 overall and 5-3 in league play, while Iona fell to 5-15 overall and 3-5 in conference action.
 
Zaucha led the way for the Canisius offense with her 16 kills on 30 swings, for an attack percentage of .467. She was also credited with seven digs, three block assists and a service ace, one the day of the team's seven aces. Sophomore Lauren Hubert had 15 kills and eight digs for the Griffs, while graduate student Sofia Hedqvist added 14 kills, nine digs and two block assists. For the game, Canisius hit .259 as a team and recorded seven team blocks, led by junior Bella Mosquera, who was good for two solo blocks and a pair of block assists.
 
For Iona, Jen Soto had a team-high 13 kills as the Gaels dropped their third-straight match. Four Iona players were credited with 10-or more digs in the losing effort, and Buse Tinaz ended the contest with a career-high eight block assists.
 
In the opening set, Canisius trailed Iona 10-8 before the Griffs used a 7-1 scoring surge to take a 14-9 lead, with Zaucha, Hedqvist and Bourque all recording kills in that run. Leading 24-18 late, Zaucha scored two of the set's final three points to seal the victory for Canisius, which improved to 5-3 on the year when taking the first set.
 
The Griffs took a 2-0 lead into the match's intermission after winning the second set by the score of 25-23. In that frame, Hubert had nine of Canisius' 17 kills. Out of the break, Iona made the match score 2-1 in favor of the Blue and Gold with a 25-21 victory. Soto and Grace Ehler combined for 10 of the Gaels' 14 kills.
 
In the final set of the match, Canisius hit .281 as a team and collected four block assists to close out the contest with the 25-19 victory. Iona jumped out to an early 4-0 lead, but six-straight points by Canisius, including a pair of service aces by Hubert, put the Blue and Gold up 6-4, and the Griffs never looked back. Leading 23-19, a kill by Hubert and an Iona attack error ended the day, as Canisius picked up its road win at Iona since the 2021 campaign.
 
GAME NOTES
• Saturday marked the 56th all-time meeting between Canisius and Iona in volleyball. The Griffs' win ended Iona's four-match win streak, dating back to the 2021 season.
• The win in four sets was the Griffs' fourth of the season, and the team's first since the Sept. 29 home win over Marist.
• Zaucha has recorded 10-or more kills in all eight MAAC matches this season and in nine of the team's last 10 conference contests, dating back to the end of the 2023 season.
• Hubert has posted 15 kills in three of the team's last four outings. She also had 18 kills in the Griffs' five-set loss to Fairfield Oct. 13.
• Mosquera has now recorded multiple solo blocks in two of the team's last three contests.
 
UP NEXT
Canisius will close out its weekend road trip to the New York City area on Sunday with a MAAC match at Manhattan. Start time in Riverdale, N.Y., is set for 1 p.m.
