Men’s Soccer Falls to Sacred Heart

A penalty-kick goal by Matthias Dick in the 74th minute sealed a 2-1 victory for Sacred Heart over Canisius in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference men's soccer action Saturday at the Demske Sports Complex in Buffalo, N.Y.

The Golden Griffins slid to 2-8-2 overall and 0-3-1 in MAAC play with the loss while Sacred Heart climbed to a 7-3-1 record with a 2-1-1 conference ledger.

The Griffs took a 1-0 lead in the 16th minute as junior Glodie Mata connected on a header to open the scoring. Senior Dylan Rice and sophomore Mason Petrucci were credited with assists after their passes allowed Mata to collect the header in the Sacred Heart box.

The Pioneers responded quickly as Brady Poor tied the match in the 21st minute. Poor collected the rebound of a strong shot by Aidan Borra which was saved by Canisius sophomore keeper Kennan King. King made a total of five saves in this contest.

The Griffs had an opportunity to take the lead in the 70th minute, but failed to convert on a penalty kick, keeping the score tied at 1-1. The Pioneers were given a penalty kick of their own in the 74th minute, allowing a Dick to give Sacred Heart the 2-1 lead and win.
