Volleyball Battles Fairfield in Five-Set Loss

Despite a career-high 30 digs from senior Jillian Hanna and a season-high 18 kills by sophomore Lauren Hubert, the visiting Fairfield Stags used a late rally in the fifth set to score a 3-2 win over Canisius in MAAC volleyball action at the Koessler Athletic Center Sunday afternoon.

The Stags (9-9, 7-0 MAAC) won the match by set scores of 21-25, 25-19, 25-17, 17-25, 15-13 to extended their win streak to seven straight. The Golden Griffins saw their two-match win streak come to an end with the loss. Canisius is now 8-10 overall and 4-3 in conference play this season.

Trailing by six and facing set point, the Stags hammered home four-straight points to cut the deficit before Canisius shut the door thanks to kills from Hubert and sophomore Hannah Kos.

Fairfield answered with a 25-19 victory in the second set. The Stags jumped out to a 7-1 lead early on in the set before taking nine of the final 16 points to even the match 1-1.

After Fairfield took a 2-1 lead in the match with a 25-17 victory in set three, Canisius forced a fifth set with a 25-17 victory of its own in the fourth set. In that frame, Fairfield initially led 10-8 early on before Canisius took the lead on an 8-2 run to take the lead 16-12. Moments later, the Griffs put together a 7-1 run to knot up the match 2-2.
