Game Recap: Ice Hockey |

Quick Start Sparks RPI Past Hockey

RPI scored three goals in the opening 8:35 of the first period to cruise to an 8-3 victory over Canisius in collegiate men's ice hockey action Saturday at LECOM Harborcenter in downtown Buffalo.

Tyler Hotson, Dovar Tinling and Jagger Tapper all scored during the first-period salvo as eight different players found the back of the net for the Engineers (0-2-0). Max Smolinski dished out three assists while Tinling added a pair of helpers to his first-period tally to also finish with a three-point night.

Senior Matt Vermaeten, junior Grant Porter and sophomore Trey Funk notched the three goals for the Golden Griffins (0-3-0).

Hotson got the Engineers on the board just 78 seconds into the game on a wrist shot from the middle of the slot before RPI struck twice in a 62-second span during a five-minute major to stretch its lead to 3-0 before the game was nine minutes old. Tinling began the sequence with a wrist shot over the glove of Canisius freshman netminder Ben Bonisteel before Tapper capped the outburst with a rebound goal.

Jake Gagnon found the back of the net just 30 seconds into the second to make it a 4-0 lead for the visitors before Vermaeten got the Griffs on the board with his first of the season with 5:28 elapsed in the middle frame.
Brad McNeil restored the Engineers' four-goal advantage less than two minutes later while Jakob Lee notched his second goal of the weekend seconds after the midway point of the frame to give RPI a 6-1 cushion heading into the third.

Porter netted his second goal in as many games 85 seconds into the final frame to pull Canisius within four.
An even-strength tally by Rainers Rullers and a power-play marker from William Gibson expanded the Engineers margin to 8-2 before Funk closed out the scoring with his first of the campaign at the 14:48 mark of the third. Noah Giesbrecht made 28 saves in his first start between the pipes at RPI to earn the win. Bonisteel and sophomore Ethan Robertson combined to make 20 saves in goal for Canisius.
