Volleyball Defeated at Quinnipiac

The Canisius volleyball team suffered a 3-0 setback against defending MAAC champion Quinnipiac Sunday at Burt Khan Court in Hamden, Conn.

The Bobcats (6-5, 2-0 MAAC) won the first set, 25-17, and took the second and third set by identical 25-18 scores to complete the sweep of the visition Golden Griffins (2-8, 0-2 MAAC).

Leilani-kai Gusta led the home side with 10 kills while her teammate, Damla Gunes, notched a match-high 28 assists. Yagmur Gunes paced the Bobcats on the service line with five aces. As a team, the Bobcats compiled a hitting percentage of .255 (35-11-94).

Freshman outside hitter Cameron Grange guided Canisius in kills for the second straight contest with 10 while fellow freshman outside hitter Lauren Hubert added in 11 digs. Sophomore setter Ella Bourque added in 19 assists to quarterback a Griffs attack that hit at a clip of .202 (34-15-94) for the match.

The Bobcats would control the first set, going up by as many as nine while limiting the Griffs to a hitting percentage of just .061 (10-8-33) en route to their 25-17 victory.

Canisius and Quinnipiac would be caught in a back-and-forth battle to begin the second set, with the two sides tied, 9-all. Still, the Bobcats would take advantage of an 8-4 run that would put them up, 17-13, and force a Griffs timeout. Out of the break, the Blue and Gold would notch two quick scores off a pair of errors from the Bobcats, but Quinnipiac would recover and close the set on an 8-3 run to win, 25-18, and take a 2-0 match lead.

Down by as much as nine in the third set, the Blue and Gold would attempt a late comeback with a 5-2 spurt, but their earlier deficit proved too large to conquer as the Bobcats tallied three of the final four points of the frame run to win the third set, 25-18, and complete the sweep.
