Balanced Offensive Attack Leads Volleyball Over Manhattan

Behind a balanced offensive attack, the Canisius volleyball team swept Manhattan 3-0 in its first Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference home match of the season, Saturday afternoon at the Koessler Athletic Center.

With the win, the Golden Griffins snap their losing skip and improve to 3-8 (1-2 MAAC), while the Jaspers fell to 2-11 (1-2 MAAC) on the season.

Junior outside hitter Kara Zaucha paced the Griffs with 10 kills and 11 digs for a double-double, while sophomore setter Ella Bourque collected 35 of the Griffs' 38 assists. Bourque and Zaucha each recorded three service aces in the victory as well. At the net, freshman Kalia Reisma was credited seven total blocks, including two solo blocks, while fellow freshman Lauren Hubert added a team-high 13 digs.  As a team, Canisius hit at a clip of .269 (41-13-104).

Mikalah Curran led Manhattan with seven kills while teammate Julianne McKee earned 11 assists. Libero Dominique Velarde led the Jaspers with a match-high 18 digs, but the Manhattan offense struggled on the day, posting a team hitting percentage of just .029 (23-23-102).

Ahead by two in the first set at 7-5, Bourque came to the service line after a Manhattan service error and started a 7-0 run that would see the Blue and Gold go ahead by nine points at 14-5. The Griffs would not relinquish their lead at any point in the opening frame, using multiple kills from six different players throughout the remainder of the set to win 25-15 and take a 1-0 match lead.

Ahead by just one late in the second set, 18-17, the Griffs used a 6-2 scoring run, led by Zaucha on the service line and two kills from freshman Cameron Grange, to take 24-19 in the set. Even with a late Jasper push to make it 24-22, the Blue and Gold would close the set thanks to a kill by sophomore Bella Mosquera to take a 2-0 match advantage.

Canisius closed out the match with the 3-0 win by limiting Manhattan to a negative team hitting percentage of -.107 (7-10-28), while hitting .476 (12-2-21) in the frame to score the 25-13 set victory. Zaucha recorded four kills in the third set to lead the way for Canisius.
