Volleyball Swept at Fairfield

The Canisius volleyball team opened the MAAC portion of its 2023 schedule with a 3-0 road loss to Fairfield at the Leo D. Mahoney Arena in Fairfield, Conn., Saturday afternoon.

The Stags (5-4, 1-0 MAAC) won the match by scores of 25-17, 25-9 and 25-23. With the loss, the Golden Griffins fall to 2-7 overall and 0-1 in MAAC action.
 
Svenja Rodenbush led Fairfield with eight kills, while Blakely Montgomery chipped in a team-best 14 assists and 10 digs. As a team, Fairfield hit at a clip of .263 (37-12-95).
 
Canisius freshman Cameron Grange led the match with 11 kills, while sophomore setter Shannon Kehoe collecting a career-high 21 assists. Junior libero Jillian Hanna added in 13 digs for the Blue and Gold. Canisius was held to its lowest hitting percentage of the season, finishing at .063 (27-21-96).
 
The Griffs would come out of the gate hot, using back-to-back service aces from junior outside hitter Kara Zaucha to start a 10-7 run. From there, Fairfield would control the set, going on a 5-0 run and later 7-0 run to help secure the 25-17 set victory and 1-0 match lead.
 
The Blue and Gold would be stymied offensively in the second set, finishing with a hitting percentage of -.217 (2-7-23), while the Stags hit at a match high .414 (15-3-29) en route to the 2-0 match lead.
 
Down by as much as five in third frame, the Griffs fought back and tied the third set at 23-23 thanks to a service aces by freshman Bella Mosquera. However, a kill by Fairfield's Allie Elliott put the Stags up 24-23, and then a service ace from Abby Jandro sealed the 3-0 match win for Fairfield.
 
MATCH NOTES:
• Saturday was the first 3-0 loss for the Griffs in a match this season.

• Since entering the starting lineup against Kent State on Sept. 8, Grange has finished with double-digit kills in each match.
• Mosquera extended her service ace streak to five with her aces in the third set.

 
UP NEXT:
The Blue and Gold will return to action at 1 p.m. Sunday afternoon, when the Griffs head to Hamden, Conn.. to face Quinnipiac. The match will be available to watch on Quinnipiac All-Access.
