Giese Tabbed Canisius Female Athlete of the Year

Softball student-athlete Megan Giese was named the 2022-23 Canisius Female Athlete of the Year, the athletic department announced on Friday.
 
Giese was chosen after a fan vote on GoGriffs.com. The other nominees were Adriana Bolender (women's diving), Maura Jordan (women's cross country/track), Skylar McArthur (women's lacrosse), Emma Oliphant (women's soccer) and Destiny Severn (rowing).
 
The 2023 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Pitcher of the Year, Giese put together a strong junior campaign which saw her earn All-MAAC First Team honors for the second straight season to compliment her preseason player of the year nod.
 
In the circle, the Buffalo, N.Y., native was dominant, tallying a career-best 208 strikeouts, joining Andrea Bunten as the only two pitchers in program history to record 200-plus strikeouts in a season. Her 208 punch outs led the MAAC and ranked 20th nationally.
 
In 11 starts during league play, Giese fanned 111 batters in 74.0 innings of work. She recorded double-digit strikeouts in seven of those outings, highlighted by a season-high 14 punch outs versus Mount St. Mary's (May 6). The righty also led the league with a 10-1 record in league play and paced the the circuit in wins (18) and innings pitched (168.0).

In the batters box, Giese collected 20 hits with 25 RBI and five home runs. Against Tennessee Tech on Feb. 17, she collected three hits, five RBI and one long ball during in Canisius' 12-4 season-opening win.
 
Giese also garnered regional honors as she was named the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) All-Great Lakes Region Third Team for the second consecutive season, joining her teammates Saige Alfaro and Christie McGee-Ross. Canisius was the only school in the MAAC to receive multiple NFCA honorees.
 
The finalists and voting for Male Athlete of the Year will be announced on GoGriffs.com on Monday, June 26.
