Baseball Advances in MAAC Championship by Eliminating Manhattan

The Canisius baseball team continued its 2023 campaign on Thursday night, as for the second time in 24 hours, the Golden Griffins won a MAAC Baseball Championship elimination game after the Blue and Gold defeated Manhattan 8-7 at Clover Stadium in Pamona, N.Y.

With the victory, Canisius (26-24-1) advances to Friday's elimination round semifinal game, where the Griffs will take on fourth-seeded Quinnipiac, who lost earlier in the day to Rider by a score of 8-0. Manhattan, which knocked off the Griffs in the tournament's first game on Wednesday, sees its season end at 22-34 with the loss.

Game Recap
Leading 2-1 through five innings of play, Canisius gave itself some breathing room in the home-half of the sixth thanks to a three-run frame that made the score 5-1 in favor of the Griffs. The key hit in that scoring rally came off the bat of junior Carlin Dick, who turned on a 2-2 pitch and drove the ball into right field, allowing teammates Kenny Dodson and Mike DeStefano to score. Dick, who drove in a team-leading three runs in the win, ended the night with two base hits, as the Blue and Gold racked up a total of 13 singles in the winning effort off four different Jasper hurlers.

Manhattan posted single runs in the seventh and the eighth to make the score 5-3 in favor of Canisius, but the Griffs responded with another three-run rally in the home-half of the eighth inning to take an 8-3 lead heading into the ninth. An RBI-single through the right side with the bases loaded by sophomore Trent Rumley gave the Griffs a 6-3 lead, and moments later, DeStefano knocked in a pair of runs for Canisius with a base knock into right field that allowed Rumley and junior Max Grant to score. That three-run effort proved to be huge for Canisius, as Manhattan sent 10 batters to the dish in the ninth inning and scored four times to get within one run at 8-7.

The Jaspers earned a pair of leadoff walks to get two runners on in the ninth, and a double to the gap in left center off the bat of Alfredo Delgado cut the Blue and Gold's lead in half at 8-4. A sac-fly and a base hit by Manhattan made the contest 8-6, and the Jaspers got within a run with two outs in the ninth after Logan Pfannebecker drew a bases-loaded walk to make the score 8-7. However, Canisius reliever Bryan Aduddle ended up earning his first career save after he got Pete Durocher to pop-up to catcher Ty Weavers for the final out of the night.

Aduddle was one of five Canisius pitchers that entered the game on Thursday, and he earned the save after he faced just three batters in 0.1 innings of work. Canisius starter Tom Peltier earned his second win of the season on the bump after he gave up just one run on two hits through 5.1 innings. In that time, he fanned two and walked three, but the senior lefty kept the Manhattan bats at bay, allowing just four Jaspers to get into scoring position through the game's first five-plus frames.

Five different Griffs had multiple hits in the win, as the Blue and Gold racked up double-digit hits in a game for the second-straight contest and for the 23rd time this season. Grant, DeStefano, Dodson, graduate student Kyle Kush and Dick all had two base hits in the victory, while Dodson scored a team-high three times in the winning cause. DeStefano also stole a base in the win, his team-leading 20th steal of the season.
