Game Recap: Baseball |

Quinnipiac’s Late Rally Ends Baseball’s Season

Fourth-seeded Quinnipiac scored three times in the top-half of the seventh inning and reliever Andrew Cubberly got out of a late jam in the ninth with the potential winning run on first base, as the Bobcats defeated Canisius 7-6 in the elimination round semifinal game at the 2023 MAAC Baseball Championship Friday afternoon at Clover Stadium in Pamona, N.Y.

With the victory, the Bobcats (30-25) advanced to the tournament's elimination round final, where Quinnipiac will meet top-seeded Fairfield at 7 p.m. Canisius' season ended with the loss. The Golden Griffins finished the year with an overall record of 26-25-1.

Game Recap
Trailing 4-3 heading into the home-half of the sixth, Canisius scored twice in that frame to take a 5-4 lead. Graduate student Kyle Kush evened the score in that frame with an RBI-single to the gap in left center that allowed Kenny Dodson to score, and then the Griffs took a 5-4 lead moments later when junior Carlin Dick hit a triple to the gap in right center, which allowed Kush to score easily.

That lead would be short-lived however, as Quinnipiac scored three times in the top-half of the seventh to take a 7-5 lead. With two outs and a runner at first base, Quinnipiac took advantage of two hit batters and a bases-loaded walk to drive in a run to make the score 5-5, and then after a Canisius pitching change, Quinnipiac's Kyle Maves drew a two-out, bases loaded walk to give the Bobcats the lead for good at 6-5. Moments later, Quinnipiac's Anthony Donofrio reached via an error, allowing another run to score as Quinnipiac took a 7-5 lead.

Canisius got a run back in the seventh inning after sophomore Jackson Strong roped a triple down the right field line, allowing junior Max Grant to score on the play. That however would be the last run of the season for the Griffs, who had two men on with two outs in the bottom of the ninth before Cubberly got a pop-up in the infield to end the game, and the Griffs' season.

Canisius starter Felix Moran went a season-high 6.2 innings of work, where he allowed five runs on 10 hits while fanning six and walking two. Quinnipiac's starter, Tim Blaisdale, moved to 5-7 on the season after he allowed five runs on nine hits over 6.0 innings of work. Cubberly's save was his first of the season.

The Griffs pounded out 10 hits in the losing effort, led by Dick, who went 2-for-4 with a double, a triple, two RBI and a run scored. Graduate student Dylan Vincent also had a three-base hit in the loss for the Griffs, who ended the season with 20-plus wins on the year for the ninth time in the last 10 years (not counting 2020's COVID-shortened season).

Game Notes
• Canisius and Quinnipiac have met in the MAAC Baseball Championship four times since the Bobcats joined the MAAC in 2013-14. Each school has won two of those four contests.
• The three triples for the Griffs are the most for the team in a game this season, and the most for the Blue and Gold since the team had four three-base hits against Manhattan on May 13, 2017.
• Canisius ended the year with 104 steals as a team, second most in school history.
• Strong (13) and Vincent (10) became the first two Canisius teammates to record 10-or more homers in the same season since 2015.
