Game Recap: Baseball |

Baseball Falls to Marist Thursday

Junior Matt Duffy fanned 10 batters across five innings, tying him with former Griff J.P. Stevenson for the most career strikeouts in program history, but Marist spoiled the outing by sending a pair of balls over the wall as the Red Foxes earned the 6-2 victory over the Golden Griffins, 6-2, Thursday afternoon in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference action from McCann Field in Poughkeepsie, N.Y.

Marist now sits at 16-35 and 10-13 in league play with its second win of the series while Canisius moves back to .500, holding a 23-23-1 overall record and 15-8 in conference action.

Niko Amory and Ethan Conrad both hit solo shots in the third and fourth innings, respectively, putting the host Red Foxes out in front, 3-0.

Despite surrendering his first long ball of the contest in the third, Duffy had punched out seven batters.

Duffy's 10th strikeout of the game on Brian Hart was his 267th of his career, which tied him with Stevenson for the program record.

Canisius got on the scoreboard in the top of the sixth when redshirt sophomore Josh Niles and junior Carlin Dick both scored on a throwing error by Marist third baseman Bayram Hot.

That would be the only runs the Griffs would plate in the game as the Red Foxes tacked on a pair of insurance runs in the sixth before plating its sixth and final run in the seventh inning.

Game Notes:
• Duffy recorded his seventh double-digit strikeout game of the season in the loss.
• In addition to being a strikeout away from the program record for career strikeouts, Duffy is now 12 punch outs away from besting his program and league record for strikeouts in a season. In 2022, the righty fanned 124 batters.
• With 11 strikeouts Thursday, the Canisius pitching staff has now fanned the second-most batters in a season in program history with 445 strikeouts. This passes the 444 punch outs, which was done during the 2015 season.
• Senior Mike DeStefano recorded his 21st multi-hit game of the season with his 2-for-5 performance on Thursday.
