Baseball Drops Opener at Marist

Marist's Justin Kapuscinski's RBI double in the bottom of the eighth proved to be the difference maker as the Red Foxes defeated Canisius, 8-6, Wednesday afternoon in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference action from McCann Field in Poughkeepsie, N.Y.

The Red Foxes improved to 15-35 and 9-13 in the MAAC with the win while the Golden Griffins sit at 23-22-1 and 15-7 in league play.

Four different Marist batters had two hits apiece, including Ethan Conrad, whose two-run single in the seventh sparked the home squad's bats.

Canisius grabbed a 2-1 advantage in the fifth when sophomore Jackson Strong slugged his 12th homer of the season with the solo shot off pitcher Caleb Kempler.

The Red Foxes came alive in the home half of the seventh, using a two-out rally to plate five runs and take its first lead of the afternoon. The host team stayed disciplined, working four walks across the inning that saw Marist send 11 batters to the plate.

Trailing 6-2, Canisius mounted a comeback in the next half inning, plating four runs to knot the game at six.

Following graduate Kyle Kush's sacrifice fly, freshman Tommy Sheridan singled through the left side, cutting Marist's lead in half. Two batters later, graduate Dylan Vincent singled up the middle before senior Kenny Dodson worked a bases-loaded walk in the next at bat, tying the contest up.

Unfortunately for the Griffs, Marist kept swinging in the bottom of the eighth, putting together three straight hits that was capped off by Kapuscinski's double.

Freshman Felix Morin earned the no-decision in just his third collegiate start. The southpaw allowed just one run on four hits while striking out three.

Game Notes:
• Morin tied his season high with 5.0 innings pitched Wednesday. He previously tossed five innings on March 26 at Mount St. Mary's.
• Strong hit his 12th home run of the season, the most in a single season by a Canisius batter since former Griff Brett Siddall also left the ballpark 12 times during the 2015 campaign.
• Strong also extended his hitting streak to 10 games with the homer.
• Sheridan recorded his first career multi-hit game with a 2-for-3 performance at the dish. The backstop also scored a run, drove in a batter and worked a walk.
• With junior Max Grant's stolen base, the Griffs has now swiped 92 bases on the year, which is the third-most in a season in program history. The team is just three bags away from passing the 2009 squad's 94 stolen bases.
• The pitching staff has fanned 434 batters on the season after punching out five batters on Wednesday. This ties them with the 2018 staff for the third-most in program history.
