Baseball Edged by Manhattan on Senior Day

An RBI groundout off the bat of Jack Lynch in the top of the seventh inning proved to be the difference as Manhattan defeated Canisius, 5-4, in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference baseball action Sunday at the Demske Sports Complex.

Pete Durocher was 2-for-4 with two RBI for the Jaspers (18-31, 11-10 MAAC), who avoided the weekend sweep with the one-run victory on Sunday. Logan Pfannenbecker was 1-for-2 with three runs scored while Alfredo Delgado went 1-for-3 with two runs batted in.

Oliver Pudvar earned the win out of the bullpen for Manhattan, allowing just one run on five hits over five full innings of work while striking out seven. Garret Garbinski pitched a scoreless ninth for the Jaspers as he picked up his team-leading sixth save of the season.

Sophomore Jackson Strong continued his torrid stretch at the plate for the Golden Griffins (23-21-1, 15-6 MAAC), going 3-for-4 with two RBI. Senior Mike DeStefano was also 3-for-4 with a run scored while senior Ryan Weiss was 1-for-3 with a solo home run.

Bryan Aduddle took the loss on the mound for Canisius, allowing two runs on four hits and three walks in three innings of work to move his record to 1-1 on the campaign.

With the score tied at 4-all in the top of the seventh, Lynch plated the go-ahead run on a groundout to first base that scored Pfannenbecker, who reached base earlier in the frame on a walk.

Canisius threatened in the home half of the seventh as DeStefano led off the inning with a single up the middle and worked his way to third with two outs. Pudvar was able to work out of the jam, however, inducing a groundout to end the threat.

The Griffs would have one last chance in the ninth, but after a one-out walk to senior Dylan Vincent, Garbinski was able to force a fielder's choice and a flyout to end the game and secure the one-win victory.

Earlier in the contest, Durocher gave Manhattan a 2-0 lead in the top of the first, courtesy of a two-run home run to right field.

Strong answered back for Canisius in the home half of the opening frame, ripping a single up the middle that plated DeStefano from second to make it a one-run game.

The Griffs tied the contest in the bottom of the second inning on a throwing error by the Jaspers that scored senior Kenny Dodson, who reached base earlier on a leadoff single.

The teams traded runs in the third inning as Delgado pushed the Jaspers back in front on a sacrifice fly before Strong knotted the score at 3-3 with a double to right center that brought home senior Brennan Chisholm.

The two sides exchanged solo home runs in the sixth. Durocher connected on his team-leading 15th long ball of the campaign to put the Jaspers in front once again, 4-3, only to see Weiss send an 0-2 offering to straight away center field to knot the score at 4-all, setting the stage for Lynch's go-ahead RBI.
