Baseball Pulls Away Late to Post 4-2 Victory over Manhattan

Canisius plated runs in the seventh and eighth innings to break a 2-2 tie and record a 4-2 victory over Manhattan in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference baseball action Saturday at the Demske Sports Complex.

Junior Ty Wevers and sophomore Jackson Strong tallied two hits apiece while Strong was one of four Golden Griffins (23-20-1, 15-5 MAAC) batters to record an RBI as he hit his team-leading 11th home run of the season. Senior Brennan Chisholm and junior Carlin Dick both went 1-for-3 at the plate with an RBI and a run scored. Senior Ryan Weiss was 1-for-4 with an RBI.

Senior Levi Abbott picked up the win to improve to 4-0 on the season. Abbott pitched the final three innings, allowing one run on one hit and three walks while striking out four. Graduate student Andrew Fron got the start and pitched four shutout innings as he issued just one walk while fanning three.

Six players accounted for the Jaspers (17-31, 10-10 MAAC) six base hits in the contest, all singles. Alfredo Delgado recorded the lone RBI for Manhattan on a sacrifice fly.

Jack Mahoney took the loss on the mound for the Jaspers, evening his season record at 1-1. Mahoney pitched the final 2.1 innings, allowing two runs on three hits and one walk. Tyler Fagler got the start for Manhattan and pitched 5.2 innings, surrendering two runs on five hits and one walk. He struck out five.

Canisius opened the scoring in the bottom of the fourth as Weiss ripped a first-pitch single to center field, plating Chisholm to put the Griffs in front.

Manhattan drew even in the top of the sixth on a sacrifice fly from Delgado before Strong restored the Canisius lead in the bottom half of the frame when recorded his second home run of the series with a solo shot to right field.

The teams once again traded single runs in the seventh. The Jaspers tied the game at 2-all when Trevor Santos scored from second on a fielder's choice. Chisholm would put the Griffs back in front in the home half with a double to left center that plated Wevers.

Dick would prove an insurance run in the bottom of the eighth, driving the initial offering from Mahoney over the right-field fence for a solo home run to make it a 4-2 contest.

A leadoff walk would bring the tying run to the plate for the Jaspers in the top of the ninth, but Abbott and the Griffs defense kept Manhattan from getting any closer as they recorded outs during the next three at bats to secure the two-run victory.
