Duffy Makes MAAC History as Baseball Defeats Manhattan Friday

Junior ace Matt Duffy became the first pitcher in league history to record multiple 100-strikeout seasons as Canisius defeated Manhattan, 14-9, in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference baseball action Friday at the Demske Sports Complex.

The only pitcher in program history to record 100 or more strikeouts in a campaign, Duffy fanned seven batters over six innings of work to reach the century mark in strikeouts for the second straight season. He scattered three runs on six hits and three walks to pick up the win and improve to 6-2.

Sophomore Jackson Strong went 3-for-5 with five RBI and three runs scored as he finished a double shy of the cycle to power a Golden Griffins (22-20-1, 14-5 MAAC) lineup that pounded out 12 hits on Friday. Senior Brennan Chisholm and junior Max Grant finished with two hits apiece while graduate student Kyle Kush was 1-for-3 with two RBI and two runs scored.

Logan Pfannenbecker hit a pair of home runs and drove in four runs for the visiting Jaspers (17-30, 10-9 MAAC). Pete Durocher tallied three hits, highlighted by a solo home run, while Trevor Hansen went 2-for-5 at the plate with two RBI.

Strong opened the scoring in the bottom of the third, depositing an 0-1 offering from Manhattan starter Will Hesslink over the left field fence for a three-run blast to put the Griffs in front.

Canisius expanded its lead to 9-0 in the home half of the fourth, using a pair of bases-loaded walks to plate the first two runs of the frame before RBI singles off the bats of Strong and senior Ryan Weiss brought home the final four runs of the inning.

Manhattan got on the board in the top of the fifth as an RBI single from Hanson and a two-run home run from Pfannenbecker made it a 9-3 game.

The Jaspers once again used the long ball to further cut into the Canisius cushion in the top of the seventh as a second two-run blast from Pfannenbecker, followed by a solo shot from Durocher in consecutive at bats trimmed the Griffs lead to 9-6.

Canisius responded in the home half of the frame, plating five runs on five hits to stretch its lead to eight, 14-6. Chisholm and Kush singled home the first three runs of the frame while a sacrifice fly from sophomore J.T. Ennen and a run-scoring single from senior Mike DeStefano accounted for the final two runs.

Manhattan pushed across a pair of runs in the eighth thanks to a solo home run from Hansen and an RBI groundout by Jack Lynch. The Jaspers closed out the scoring in the ninth as Jacob Radziewicz roped a one-out double to center field before scoring two batters later on a balk to determine the final five-run margin.

Hesslink took the loss for the Jaspers to fall to 2-10 on the season. In 3.2 innings of work, Hesslink allowed nine runs (all earned) on six hits and six walks. He struck out five.
