Game Recap: Men's Lacrosse |

Third-Quarter Surge Send Sharks Past Men’s Lacrosse

A six-goal outburst in the third quarter allowed LIU to take control of the game and post a 13-9 victory over Canisius in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference men's lacrosse action Saturday at Bethpage Federal Credit Union Stadium in Brookville, N.Y.

Brad Beck notched four goals and Mark Regan tallied one goal and three assist to pace the Sharks (5-6, 4-2 MAAC) attack. Three players – James Butler, Marcin Maleski and Sean Boll tallied two goals apiece while Tom Von Bargen finished with three points on a goal and two assists. Sean Gillman made 14 saves between the pipes for the home team.

Senior Nathan Conry tallied a team-high four points on two goals and two assists for the Golden Griffins (2-10, 1-5 MAAC) while junior Keegan Kozack chipped in three points on two goals and an assist. Sophomore goalie Tommy Kunz recorded 14 saves while freshman face-off specialist Micah Hanson was 15-of-25 at the X with a team-high eight ground balls.

Tied at 5-all at the start of the third quarter, LIU rattled off four unanswered goals from four different players over the opening nine minutes of the frame to grab a 9-5 lead.

Conry temporarily halted the Sharks surge, netting his second of the game with 3:52 to play in the third, but LIU responded with back-to-back tallies from Beck and Von Bargen to build an 11-6 cushion.

Sophomore Ethan Thomson netted his first collegiate goal as the clock expired in the third, giving the Griffs some life early in the fourth as it recorded two of the first three goals of the final frame to pull within three, 12-9, with just over six minutes to play.

That would be as close as Canisius would get, however, as the Sharks kept the Griffs off the board the rest of the way before closing out the scoring in the final minute of play to determine the four-goal margin of victory.

Earlier in the contest, Canisius jumped out to an early 2-0 lead thanks to goals from sophomores Patrick Mitchell and Kayden Easter, only to see LIU counter with tallies from Maleski and Butler to knot the score at 2-2.

The Griffs regained their two-goal edge before the end of the first quarter, using an even-strength marker from junior Hunter Parucki and a man-up tally from Kozack to take a 4-2 lead into the second.

The Sharks opened the scoring in the second quarter as Beck and Buter got on the board in the opening 3:37 of the frame to knot the score at 4-4. The teams traded goals over the final 11-plus minutes of the second, with Conry scoring for the Griffs and Beck answering back for the Sharks, sending the teams to the locker room tied at 5-5 and setting the stage for the Sharks' third-quarter takeover.

Head Coach Mark Miyashita's Post Game Comments
"Today our team played with the most passion and focus for 60 minutes on the season. Obviously, we came up short today; not being able to take advantage of some opportunities to score a few more goals here and there and maybe getting one or two more stops, but the overall focus, effort and attitude of the guys in the locker room today was the best that it has been all season. It was great to see that despite coming up short on the scoreboard.

"There's a two-minute stretch in the third where they were able to get three goals. That helped give them a cushion. We had a couple of different breakdowns in all facets of the game where it would have been good to just get a stop or get a goal. It didn't happen today. So, we've got to be able to not allow those mini runs. That happened here today.

"Our goal is always to have multiple guys chipping in on the scoresheet every game. If one or two individuals are having a bit of a day, that's great to see. But we want to be as balanced as we can and be able to go deep into our bench of guys that can put the ball in the back of the net on any given day. It's always good to see different guys step up and take advantage of some of those opportunities like the ones we saw today."
