Game Recap: Men's Lacrosse |

Men’s Lacrosse Unable to Complete Comeback Versus the Mount

Mount St. Mary's jumped out to an early lead and held off a late Canisius rally to record a 15-13 victory in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference men's lacrosse action Wednesday at Waldron Family Stadium in Emmitsburg, Md.

Jared McMahon scored four goals and added an assist to lead the Mountaineers (7-6, 6-1 MAAC), who kept pace with Manhattan atop the MAAC standings with Wednesday's victory. Jeremy Wilson finished with four points on two goals and two assists while Kelly Gouin pitched in three goals.

Junior Keegan Kozack tallied a team-high four points on three goals and an assist for the Golden Griffins (2-11, 1-6 MAAC). Three players – senior Kyle Brunsch (1g/2a), redshirt sophomore Colin Kelly (3g) and sophomore Jaxon Fridge (1g/2a) – all finished with three points each.

Mount St. Mary's raced out to an early 3-0 lead on a trio of tallies in the opening 4:31 of the contest before sophomore Kayden Easter got Canisius on the board midway through the opening frame.

The Mountaineers regained control of the game moments later, using a second three-goal spurt to build a 6-1 cushion just one minute into the second quarter.

A man-up goal from Kozack at the 12:10 mark of the second quarter pulled the Griffs within four, but the Mount closed out the first half by scoring three of the final four goals of the opening frame to take a 9-3 lead into the halftime break.

The third quarter saw the teams trade goals in the early going before Brunsch struck for his first of the game at the 9:33 mark to ignite a 7-1 run that saw seven different players find the back of the net over a nearly 15-minute stretch to tie the game at 12-all with 10:30 to play in regulation.

The teams exchanged single tallies over the next two minutes to keep the game tied when the Mount struck for a pair of tallies from McMahon and Jeremy Wilson just 53 seconds apart to give the Mountaineers a two-goal edge, 15-13, and 7:05 on the clock.

Canisius pushed over the final seven minutes of regulation, generating the final 11 shot attempts of the contest. A pair of shots off the post and two saves from the Mount's Griffin McGinley during that stretch kept the Griffs from getting any closer, allowing the Mountaineers to secure the win.

Head Coach Mark Miyashita's Post Game Comments
"Today was a tale of two halves. We did not come out in the first half ready to play and it showed by the score and having 16 turnovers, which is unacceptable. In the second half, we found another gear and a lot of resolve and got it to a tie game. But unfortunately, you spend a lot of emotional and physical capital battling back from down six goals. I'm proud of the effort, proud of the heart and the passion. But it doesn't make up for the way we started.

"We stress all the time that we want to do things by committee on the offensive end of the field. It doesn't matter who's scoring the goal or getting the primary assist. We're also celebrating the guy who set the pick, the guy who had the secondary assist, the defense doing their job, getting us the ball in transition or whatever it may be. So, our motto is to be as egoless as we can when it comes to offensive production and it was great to see some guys step up when they ran our brand of lacrosse, our systems and trusted them. It shows that it works and hopefully we can continue to see that over the next two games.

"Guys dialed in and it goes to the game plan, the defensive game plan and doing the things that we were asking of them and having them trusting and running that stuff led to us getting some great stops and great transition opportunities. We just got to be able to pay attention to the little details throughout the course of the week and the course of the season because everything builds on one another and there are a lot of lessons to be learned throughout the course of the season."
