Baseball’s Comeback Falls Short as Morehead State Takes Series Finale

Canisius plated five runs in the top of the eighth to cut Morehead State's lead to two, but were unable to muster anymore runs in the contest at the Eagles earned a 9-7 victory over the Golden Griffins to take the series Saturday afternoon in collegiate baseball action from Allen Field in Morehead, Ky.
 
Colton Becker paced Morehead State (19-12) as the infielder went 2-2 with a pair of runs and RBI while swiping three bags in the win.
 
Graduate Kyle Kush reached base safely four times in the setback for the Griffs (10-15) as the infielder registered two hits and worked a pair of free passes.
 
Senior Mike DeStefano drove in Canisius' first run in the opening frame when he connected on a two-out double to the right-center gap to bring home graduate Dylan Vincent.
 
Morehead State responded with a run in both the home halves of the first and second innings.
 
Entering the sixth with a 3-2 lead, the Eagles broke the game open with a six-run frame.
 
Morehead State recorded four straight hits to put six runs on the board, including two run singles from Roman Kuntz and Becker.
 
The Griffs looked to mount a comeback in the top of the eighth when the first three batters reached base.
 
Moments later, Kush and junior Ty Wevers worked back-to-back bases loaded walks, cutting Morehead State's lead to 9-5.
Canisius continued to move station-to-station for the next three plate appearances thanks to RBI singles from Vincent and Strong before senior Kenny Dodson had an RBI groundout to the shortstop for the sixth run of the frame.
 
Junior Max Grant led off the top of the ninth with a single to right, but the Griffs were unable to put across any more runs in the contest.
 
Senior Tom Peltier earned a no-decision in the start, striking out five batters in three innings while allowing just one run on three hits.
 
Sophomore Peyton Consigli tossed the final 2.2 innings for Canisius, allowing one hit in the shutout frames while fanning four Morehead State batters.
 
Game Notes:
• With the sweep, Morehead State tied Canisius in the all-time series at 10 games a piece.
• DeStefano has now recorded a multi-hit game in five consecutive contests and in seven of the last eight games.
• The Canisius pitching staff has now fanned at least 10 batters in eight straight ball games.
• Kush extended his hitting streak to nine games in the loss on Saturday.
• With his 14th stolen base on the season Saturday, DeStefano is now tied with Anthony Massicci (2013-16) for the sixth-most in program history.
