Baseball Drops Friday Contest at Morehead State

Morehead State's Colton Becker drove in five runs, including a grand slam in the fifth, as he lifted the Eagles to a 10-4 victory over Canisius Friday afternoon in collegiate baseball action from Allen Field in Morehead, Ky.

Becker recorded a multi-hit performance in the second straight game of the series for Morehead State (18-12) while starter John Bakke fanned eight Golden Griffin batters over six innings in the win.

Redshirt sophomore Josh Niles had the first three-hit game of his career in the loss for Canisius (10-13) as the Griffs had 15 hits in the contest.

Niles was one of five Canisius batters to have a multi-hit performance on Friday.

Niles recorded his first hit of the contest in the opening frame, earning a two-out infield single that brought home sophomore Jackson Strong, who recorded a one-out double.

Morehead knotted the game at one in the third when Isaias Guzman led off the frame with a solo shot.

As the host team held a 3-1 lead heading into the top of the fifth, the Griffs scored a pair of runs to re-tie the game.

Following senior Mike DeStefano's two-out single, the outfielder stole second, putting himself in scoring position.

Niles then singled to left to drive in his second run of the game before plating Canisius' third run later in the inning on sophomore Trent Rumley's single to right.

Morehead State responded in the bottom half of the frame when Becker's grand slam broke the game open and the host Eagles never looked back.

The home team tacked on another run in the seventh before plating a pair in the eighth to make it a 10-4 game.

Senior Chris Pouliot took the loss for Canisius, allowing five runs on three hits over 4.2 innings while striking out six. He handed the ball off to sophomore Aaron Duffy, who fanned six batters in 3.1 innings of relief.

Game Notes:
• Morehead State has cut Canisius' lead in the all-time series to just one game as the Griffs now hold a 10-9 advantage.
• The 12 strikeouts between Pouliot and Duffy now give Canisius seven straight games as a staff with at least 10 punchouts.
• Duffy has struck out at least five batters in four of his seven appearances this season.
• DeStefano, Niles and Rumley along with graduates Kyle Kush and Dylan Vincent all recorded multi-hit performances in the loss.
• After swiping second in Friday's game, DeStefano is now a perfect 13-for-13 on the season in stolen base attempts.
• The stolen base also gives DeStefano 42 for his career, which ties him with Connor Panas (2012-15) and Jake Burlingame (2017-21) for seventh-most in program history.
