Duffy Makes History as Baseball Drops Opener to Morehead State

Despite junior Matt Duffy notching 10 strikeouts to move into fourth place all-time in program history, the Canisius offense could not muster a run after the fourth inning as it fell to Morehead State, 18-4, Thursday afternoon in collegiate baseball non-conference action from Allen Field in Morehead, Ky.

Morehead State (17-12, 5-1 OVC) was paced by Colton Becker with three hits. Chase Vinson hit two long balls for the Eagles, one of which was a grand slam in the bottom of the fourth. Roman Kuntz and Becker would each hit one home run for the home side to pair with Vinson's two long balls. On the mound, Riley Bradshaw would pick up the win after 4.0 innings of work where he fanned four batters and allowed six hits.

Sophomore Jackson Strong and senior Mike DeStefano led the Golden Griffins (10-13, 6-0 MAAC). Strong hit the lone home run for the Griffs in the afternoon. DeStefano recorded his third straight multi-hit performance with a three-hit effort in the setback. Along with 10 punchouts from Duffy, junior Brian Aduddle chipped in a strikeout as well in the seventh inning.

Down 2-0 in the top of the first, the Canisius would cross their first run over the plate off a fielding error from Morehead State, before redshirt sophomore JT Ennen drove a single into the outfield to bring home Strong and tie the game.

With two outs in the top of the third, Strong would break the deadlock, sending a ball over the center field wall to give the Griffs their lone lead of the contest, 3-2.

During the bottom of the third, Duffy made history, striking out Nick Gooden for his ninth of the contest to pass Andrew Sipowicz for the fourth-most strikeouts in program history with 209.

The Blue and Gold would add to their lead in the top of fourth, with graduate Dylan Vincentdriving home junior Carlin Dick off a sacrifice fly to left field to increase the Griffs lead, 4-2.

The Eagles offense would come alive in the fourth inning, with Becker doubling to left center, allowing Chase Vinson to send a ball into right field and tie the game. After Jackson Feltner got hit by a pitch to load the bases, Kuntz sent a ball down the right field line to clear the bases and make it an 8-4 ballgame.

The Eagles would add in 10 runs over the next four innings while keeping the Griff scoreless to extend their lead to 18-4 and seal the victory.

Game Notes:
• Now at 210 career strikeouts, Duffy is 16 punchouts away from passing Devon Stewart for third place all time.
• With the 10 strikeouts, Duffy has recorded double-digit strikeouts for the second straight game and eighth time in his career. It also marks the second time he has had back-to-back starts with at least 10 punchouts (April 2, 2022 at Quinnipiac and April 8, 2022 vs. Iona).
• The pitching staff has recorded double-digit strikeouts for the sixth consecutive contest.
• Strong notched three-or-more hits for the third time this season.
• Canisius still leads the all-time series against Morehead State, 10-8.
