Duffy Dominates in Baseball’s Win over Saint Peter’s

Canisius junior pitcher Matt Duffy fanned a career-high 14 batters and allowed just one hit over seven innings of work, as the Golden Griffins cruised to a 15-0 win over Saint Peter's in MAAC baseball action Friday afternoon at the Demske Sports Complex.

Canisius improved to 18-18 overall and 10-3 in MAAC play with its third-straight victory. The Griffs have now taken three of their last four MAAC games after dropping a pair of league contests at Rider April 16. Saint Peter's saw its two-game win streak come to an end with the loss. The Peacocks are 6-33 overall and 3-13 in league play on the season.

Game two of Friday's scheduled MAAC doubleheader was postponed due to rain moving into the Western New York region. Saturday's schedule will feature two games, with game one starting at 11 a.m.

Game Recap
Duffy wasted little time mowing down the Peacocks, as he struck out seven of the first nine batters he faced through three innings. The Canisius offense provided the junior hurler with plenty of run support early, scoring six times through the game's first three frames. In the top-half of the first, the Blue and Gold scored the game's first run after sophomore Jackson Strong earned a bases-loaded walk, and then graduate student Dylan Vincent drove in a run with a sac-fly to left, which allowed junior Max Grant to score easily from third base.

Canisius tacked on a third run in the home-half of the second on the power of a solo homer by junior Carlin Dick, and then the Griffs added three more in the third, highlighted by a two-run double off the bat of graduate student Kyle Kush.

Duffy continued to deal in the fourth with two more strikeouts before Canisius scored four runs on five hits in inning to take a 10-0 lead. In the fifth, Duffy fanned the leadoff man for his 10th strikeout of the day before Saint Peter's finally reached base on an infield error. A leadoff single back up the middle by Saint Peter's centerfielder Nick Markantonatos to start the sixth ended Duffy's no-hit bid, but the Burlington, Ontario native fanned two of the next three batters he faced to end the inning. In the seventh, Duffy stuck out Saint Peter's second baseman Jack Eichler for his career-high 14th K on the day.

Canisius earned six walks in the home-half of the seventh and plated four runs to take the 15-0 lead. Freshman Sam Staerker and sophomore Tyler Greenleaf each tossed a scoreless inning in relief of Duffy to seal the win for Canisius. Duffy improved to 5-2 on the year on the hill with the victory.

Six Canisius batters had multiple hits in the win, led by senior Mike DeStefano, who went 3-for-4 with two runs scored and two RBI. Grant had two hits and scored twice, while senior Brennan Chisholm went 2-for-3 with a double and a run scored. Graduate student Ryan Weiss was 2-for-4 with a double and three RBI, while Strong scored twice and stole a career-high three bases.

Game Notes
• Canisius improved to 47-21 against Saint Peter's all-time and 30-7 at home.

• Duffy passed both Devon Stewart (225) and Canisius Hall of Famer Shane Davis (231) in the all-time list for career punch outs. The righty now has the second-most fanned batters with 238.
• Duffy has now struck out 10-or-more batters in four of his five starts in league play and has lowered his ERA to a 1.06 versus MAAC opponents.
