Game Recap: Baseball |

Bats Lead Baseball to Sweep Over Saint Peter’s

Canisius recorded 16 extra-base hits including three home runs from graduate Dylan Vincent to power its way to 12-8 and 13-0 victories over Saint Peter's on Saturday in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference action from the Demske Sports Complex in Buffalo, N.Y.

The Golden Griffins improved their record to 20-18 overall and 12-3 in the MAAC, improving their winning streak to five games. Canisius closed out its eight-game homestand with seven victories. Saint Peter's falls to 6-35 overall and 3-15 in league play on the season with the pair of losses.

Game One Recap
After Canisius starter Chris Pouliot was removed from the game with an injury in the top of the second inning, Saint Peter's wasted little time welcoming reliever Felix Morin to the ballgame, plating five runs over the course of the second and third frames.

Trailing 5-1 in the bottom of the fourth, Canisius cut into the Peacocks' lead with Vincent's two run shot to center, his first of three long balls on the day.

Sophomore Jackson Strong jacked his ninth homer in the next inning, a two-run home run to knot the contest at five.

Leading 6-5, graduate Kyle Kush began a two-out rally for Canisius during the seventh that saw the home squad plate four runs. Kush stroked an 0-2 single up the middle to plate Vincent before coming around to score on senior Mike DeStefano's two-RBI triple. DeStefano later scored the team's tenth run of the contest on a wild pitch from Saint Peter's hurler Ryan Seymour.

The Peacocks looked to make a comeback in the top of the ninth. Trailing 12-5, the visiting team used three straight knocks from Jack Eichler, Sam Haney and Jonathan Behm to cut the Griffs' lead to 12-8

Redshirt sophomore Ethan Hennessy was able to limit any further damage and secure his second save of the season in the win.

Junior Levi Abbott earned his career-high third win of the season, tossing three shutout innings in relief. The righty allowed just one hit over the course of the appearance, striking out one batter.

Game Two Recap
The bats remained hot to open the second game as the Griffs quickly got out to a 3-0 lead.

After a DeStefano single, junior Max Grant tripled down the right field line and scored on a throwing error. Sophomore Trent Rumley later singled home fellow second year Cole Sebastian with a single to left.

Graduate Andrew Fron made quick work of the Peacocks, throwing just 49 pitches over three shutout innings in his first start in league play this season. Earning his first win of the campaign, Fron yielded just one hit and two free passes while fanning a pair of batters.

Canisius opened the contest up in the third, using a trio of extra-base hits to plate five runs. Strong served a 1-0 pitch into the right-center gap to score Sebastian before Vincent stepped to the plate.

Vincent crushed the first pitch he saw from Kyle Mahady, sending it well over the centerfield fence for a two-run shot. Up 6-0, freshman backstop Tommy Sheridan drove in his first collegiate RBI with a two-run double to cap off the frame.

In the very next inning, Vincent connected on his second two-run shot in as many frames, giving the Griffs double-digit runs for the third straight game.

Canisius tacked on three more runs over the final two innings, highlighted by RBI doubles from junior Carlin Dick and DeStefano in the sixth.

Sophomore Aaron Duffy locked down the seventh by striking out a pair to help Canisius earn the mercy-rule victory and sweep Saint Peter's.
