Game Recap: Baseball |

Baseball Takes Two Wins Over St. Bonaventure

Senior Mike DeStefano had a go-ahead two-run single in the sixth inning of game one before the pitching staff tossed a one hitter to complete the sweep and help Canisius earn 9-7 and 3-2 victories over St. Bonaventure Tuesday afternoon in non-conference collegiate baseball action from the Demske Sports Complex in Buffalo, N.Y.

The Golden Griffins won all four contests over the Bonnies in the home-and-home series, helping improve to 17-18 on the campaign. The pair of losses puts St. Bonaventure at 6-30 on the season.

Canisius ran wild throughout the afternoon, stealing eight bases in the first game before swiping five more bags in the back half of the twin bill.

Game One Recap
After allowing a solo home run in the top of the second, Canisius responded with a four-spot in the home half of the frame, highlighted by a double steal.

With runners on the corners, sophomore Cole Sebastian swiped his first of three bases in the contest. With the backstop throwing down to second, DeStefano broke for home, capping off the four-run inning.

The Bonnies tied the contest at four the very next inning thanks to an RBI single from Christian Szablewski followed by a two-run double off the bat of Evan Dieter.

After briefly taking a 5-4 lead in the fourth, the Griffs grabbed the lead for good in the home half, plating three more runs.

Tied at five, graduate Ryan Weiss slugged his second of three hits in the game, sending a 1-2 pitch to the left-center gap to plate a pair.

St. Bonaventure looked to mount a comeback in the ninth when Jackson DeJohn slugged a two-run homer to cut Canisius lead to 9-7.

Graduate Brett Kochanski was able to further the damage and secure the victory for the Griffs.

Game Two Recap
Senior Brennan Chisholm and sophomore Jackson Strong helped put Canisius out to a 2-0 advantage in the first inning, using an RBI single and a sacrifice fly for the early lead.

The lead was short-lived as St. Bonaventure quickly knotted the contest at two with a two-run shot off the bat of Pierce Hendershot, the team's lone hit in the game.

Canisius' pitching staff would settle down, striking out eight batters over the final five innings of the game.

The Griffs used discipline to take the 3-2 lead in the fourth as senior Kenny Dodson worked a walk to load the bases before sophomore Cole Sebastian drew a free pass of his own to allow sophomore Trent Rumley to break the tie.

Sophomore Peyton Consigli earned his third save of the campaign, striking out a pair of batters in the seventh.
