Baseball Powers Its Way to Victory over Quinnipiac

Canisius pounded out 17 hits and used a career-high 11 strikeouts from senior Chris Pouliot to post a 15-9 victory over Quinnipiac in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference baseball action Saturday at the Demske Sports Complex.

Junior Ty Wevers went 3-for-5 with four RBI to pace the Golden Griffins (15-17, 9-2 MAAC) lineup. Sophomore Jackson Strong also record three base knocks, including his seventh home run of the campaign, while driving in a pair of runs. Graduate student Dylan Vincent and senior Kenny Dodson both recorded a pair of RBI in the victory.

Anthony Donofrio went 4-for-5 with two runs batted in for the Bobcats (14-21, 7-7 MAAC). Kyle Maves recorded a pair of hits and two RBI while McGwire Tuffy finished the day 2-for-4 at the plate.

Canisius jumped out to a 6-0 lead in the home half of the first inning as it took advantage of five hits, highlighted by a two-run double from Vincent, to grab the early lead.

The Griffs stretched their margin to 9-0 with a solo home run from Josh Niles in the second and a pair of runs in the third as an RBI single from graduate student Kyle Kush brought home the first run of the frame before a double off the bat of junior Max Grant plated Kush.

The Bobcats got on the board with three runs in the top of the fourth to make it a six-run contest while an RBI single from Dodson in the bottom of the fourth pushed the Canisius lead back to seven, 10-3.

A pair of solo home runs by Quinnipiac in the top of the sixth trimmed the Griffs lead to five, but Canisius answered in the bottom half of the frame by plating five runs, all with two outs on the board, to grab a 15-5 advantage.

A bases-clearing double from Wevers brought home the first three runs of the frame before Strong closed out the scoring in the sixth two batters later with a two-run blast to center field for his seventh home run of the campaign.

Quinnipiac would tally the final four runs of the game, plating two runs in the seventh and a pair of runs in the ninth, but it would not be enough as the Griffs picked up their second victory of the weekend series.

Pouliot earned his first win of the season, pitching 6.0 innings and allowing five runs (two earned) on seven hits. Senior Levi Abbott replaced Pouliot in the top of the seventh and pitched rest of the way, allowing four runs on five hits and one walk. He struck out four Bobcats to earn his first save of the season.

Tim Blaisdell took the loss on the mound for Quinnipiac, lasting just four innings. He allowed 10 runs (eight earned) on 11 hits and two walks. He struck out five.
