Quinnipiac Takes Series Finale Over Baseball

Catcher Keegan O'Connor's grand slam in the fourth helped cap off a seven-run inning as Quinnipiac defeated Canisius, 10-8, Sunday afternoon in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference baseball action from the Demske Sports Complex in Buffalo, N.Y.

Senior Mike DeStefano slugged four hits for the third time in his career while also driving in a pair of runs in the setback for the Golden Griffins (15-18, 9-3 MAAC). Redshirt sophomore Josh Niles crossed the plate three times in the loss, reaching base twice via the walk and on a throwing error.

Sophomore Jackson Strong led off the home half of the first with a leadoff homer, his eighth longball of the campaign.

Later in the inning, senior Kenny Dodson singled home junior Max Grant for the early 2-0 lead.

Quinnipiac responded with a pair of their own in the second when Sean Swenson hit a two-run shot off Canisius starter Tom Peltier.

The Bobcats later broke the game open in the fourth, sending 10 batters to the plate across the seven-run inning.

Swenson tied the contest at three with an RBI double to the right-center gap before scoring on a passed ball for the 4-3 lead.

Holding a 5-3 advantage, O'Connor connected on a 2-1 pitch from Griffs reliever Ethan Hennessy, clearing the bases with the grand slam.

Leading 10-7 in the bottom of the ninth, Canisius looked to mount a comeback when graduate Dylan Vincent roped an RBI double down the right field line, putting a pair of runners in scoring position down two.
Bobcats reliever Mason Ulsh got junior Carlin Dick to fly out to center to end the ballgame and spoil Canisius' chance at sweeping the season series.

Peltier took the loss for the Griffs, giving up six runs over three-plus innings of work.

Hennessy surrendered four runs of his own, but allowed just one across the final five frames of relief.
