Baseball Holds on to Beat Quinnipiac Friday

Junior Max Grant reached base in all five plate appearances while head coach Matt Mazurek recorded his 125th career win as Canisius earned a 7-6 victory over Quinnipiac Friday afternoon in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference baseball action from the Demske Sports Complex in Buffalo, N.Y.

Graduate Dylan Vincent slugged the Golden Griffins' (14-17, 8-2 MAAC) third home run of the game, connecting on the eventual go-ahead two run shot in the seventh.

Anthony Donofrio paced Quinnipiac (14-20, 7-6) after going 2-for-4 with a walk, double and solo home run.

Trailing 1-0 in the bottom of the third, Canisius' bats came alive in a big way as the team scored a run in five straight innings.

With two outs in the frame, Grant and senior Brennan Chisholm went back-to-back with a pair of solo shots before junior Carlin Dick's sacrifice fly in the home half of the fourth inning made it a 3-2 ballgame.

In the fifth, Redshirt sophomore Josh Niles recorded an RBI single while graduate Kyle Kush's RBI double in the sixth extended Canisius' lead to 5-2.

Vincent gave the Griffs a five-run advantage in the seventh, capping off the offensive day with a two-run shot over the right field fence that also plated Niles.

Quinnipiac did not go away as the first six batters reached base in the ninth, cutting Canisius' lead to 7-5.

Donofrio's one-out RBI fielder's choice made it a one-run ballgame with runners on the corners and two out in the inning.

Graduate Brett Kochanski got Sebastian Mueller to fly out to right to end the threat and help secure the win for Canisius.

Kochanski allowed just one run across the inning, earning his team-leading third save of the season.

Junior Matt Duffy earned the start for Canisius, striking out 11 batters across six innings of work. Duffy yielded just two runs on four hits and a pair of free passes, earning his fourth win in conference play in as many starts.
