Siena Spoils Senior Day for Women's Basketball

Siena defeated Canisius, 76-58, to spoil its Senior Day festivities in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference women's basketball action Saturday afternoon at the Koessler Athletic Center.
 
The Saints (18-12, 12-8 MAAC), were led by Teresa Seppala, who had a game-high 22 points while Ahniysha Jackson and Anajah Brown added in 15 and 14 points, respectively. Brown also corralled a game-high eight boards. Siena shot 25-of-57 (.439) from the field during their victory.
 
The Golden Griffins (9-20, 6-14 MAAC) were paced by reigning MAAC Rookie of the Week, Sisi Eleko, and sophomore guard, Athina Lexa, who finished with 13 points each. Sophomore guard Cheyenne Stubbs added in 11 points of her own in the loss. In her final contest in Buffalo, N.Y., graduate student guard Vannessa Garrelts collected a team-high seven rebounds, dished out five assists and chipped in four points. As a team, Canisius shot 21-of-53 (.396) from the floor for the contest.
 
Canisius would come out hot off the opening whistle, racing ahead to a 9-3 lead during the opening 3:15 of action thanks to a 3-pointer from the left wing by senior Jane McCauley to open the game.
 
The Saints would take control after the Griffs' opening salvo, limiting Canisius to just two more makes for the remainder of the quarter while going 6-of-11 (.545) from the field during a 15-9 run to tie the game at 18-all after 10 minutes of action.
 
Canisius opened the second quarter by retaking the lead, 23-22, off back-to-back buckets from Lexa, but Siena would shut down the Blue and Gold during the middle portion of the quarter, scoring 19 of the next 21 points to jump ahead, 41-25, with less than two minutes to play. McCauley and Lexa would each tally a late bucket, but the Saints would enter halftime ahead by 13, 43-30.
 
The Canisius offense found a spark at the start of the second half, using a jumper from Eleko to ignite a 13-3 spurt and cut its defect to just three, 46-43, with 4:20 left in the third frame. Five different members of the Blue and Gold would score during the stretch with Eleko, Lexa, Garrelts, Chloe Chard Peloquin and Lydia Gattozzi all finding their onto the scoresheet. 

   
Siena's Seppala would notch a layup with 4:10 to make it a two-possession game once more and spark the Saints' own 9-3 run to end the quarter and carry a 55-46 advantage into the fourth.
 
Canisius and Siena would open the final frame of action going bucket-for-bucket as Canisius found itself down nine, 65-56, with 4:47 to play. Siena put the game out of reach as it closed the contest on an 11-2 run to spoil senior day for the Griffs.

Game Notes:

• Prior to the contest, Canisius honored their three senior managers (Ja'Kye Womack, MC Soulouque and Blake Burks) along with Garrelts for senior day.
• Gattozzi appeared in her first game since Feb. 25 at Iona. She totaled two points in two minutes of action
• Eleko led the Griffs in scoring for the fourth time this season while for Lexa, this is the second time she finished the game as the Griffs leading scorer.
• Junior guard Giana Hernandez-Boulden finished the contest with a career-high two blocks. Her two blocks also represented a game-high as well.

Canisius will return to action on Tuesday, March 7, at 10:30 a.m., when the team takes on No. 8 seed Mount St. Mary's in the first round of the 2023 Hercules Tires MAAC Women's Basketball Championship tournament in Atlantic City, N.J.
