Women’s Basketball Season Ends with Loss to Mount St. Mary’s

The Mount St. Mary's Mountaineers used an 8-0 run over the span of 2:12 in the later stages of the third quarter en route to a 54-41 win over Canisius in the first game of the 2023 Hercules Tires MAAC Women's Basketball Championship Tuesday morning at Jim Whelan Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, N.J.
 
With the win, the eighth-seeded Mountaineers (12-18) advance to the tournament's quarterfinal round where the will play top-seeded Iona, while the ninth-seeded Golden Griffins see their season end with an overall record of 9-21.
 
For Canisius, sophomore Cheyenne Stubbs scored a team-high 15 points, while freshman Sisi Eleko recorded a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds. The Griffs ended the contest by shooting 26.4 percent from the field, with eight of their 14 made field goals coming from 3-point land.
 
Mount St. Mary's guard Michaela Harrison led all scorers with a game-high 18 points, highlighted by four makes from behind the 3-point line. Fellow guards Aryna Taylor and Jessica Tomasetti each scored 14 points in the victory for the Mount, which ended the contest by shooting 37.3 percent from the floor as a team. Tomasetti grabbed 10 boards to go along with four assists as well.
 
Canisius took an early 11-9 lead after the first quarter after the Blue and Gold made three 3-point field goals in the game's opening 10 minutes of play. In the second quarter, the Griffs outscored the Mountaineers by a 9-3 clip over the span of 5:43 to take their largest lead of the game at 20-12 with 4:17 left before halftime. In the scoring surge, all nine of Canisius' points came by the way of 3-point field goal makes. However, the Mount rallied and sent the teams in the locker rooms at halftime tied at 22-22 thanks to a 10-2 run over the closing 2:29 of the first half.
 
Out of halftime, Mount St. Mary's scored the first five points of the stanza to take a 27-22 lead with 7:44 left in the third quarter. Canisius made it a one-possession game with 4:05 left in the third after Stubbs knocked down a trey off a pass from teammate Lydia Gattozzi. But that would end up being as close as the Griffs would get the rest of the way, as the Mount answered with the game's next eight points, highlighted by back-to-back triples by Taylor and Harrison, to make the score 40-29 in favor of Mount St. Mary's.
 
Canisius was able to whittle Mount's lead down to 44-38 after Eleko scored a bucket with 2:45 remaining in the fourth quarter, but the Mountaineers answered the bell by scoring the game's next six points over a span of 56 seconds to seal the victory.

Game Notes
• Tuesday marked the eighth all-time meeting between Canisius and Mount St. Mary's. This was the first time in series history where the two teams met on a neutral court.
• Tuesday marked the first time all season where the Griffs and their opponents were tied at the halftime intermission.
• The Griffs forced Mount St. Mary's to turn the ball over 17 times in the game.
• Graduate student Vannessa Garrelts grabbed nine boards in the losing effort for Canisius, her fourth game this season with eight-or more rebounds.
• Stubbs closed out the season by scoring in double-figures in seven of the Griffs' last 10 games.
• Eleko's 10-point, 10-rebound performance in the game was her third double-double of the season. Two of those three double-double games came against Mount St. Mary's.
