Game Recap: Baseball |

Baseball Drops a Pair at Central Virginia Classic

Canisius junior Matt Duffy went 6.1 innings where he allowed two runs on three hits to go with six strikeouts, but an RBI-single by West Virginia's Dayne Leonard with one out in the eighth inning proved to be the difference, as the Mountaineers defeated the Golden Griffins 3-2 in Canisius' second game of the day at the Central Virginia Classic in Richmond, Va.

Earlier in the day, the Griffs (2-4) took an early 2-0 lead before Richmond scored once in the third, six times in the fourth and then tacked on five runs in the eighth to record a 12-2 victory in eight innings.

Game One Recap
Canisius jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top-half of the third inning against the Spiders (3-6) after freshman Mason Cisco grounded out to short, allowing junior Carlin Dick to cross the plate, and moments later, senior Kenny Dodson drove home graduate student Kyle Kush with a sac-fly to left field. The Spiders cut the Griffs' lead in half to 2-1 in the bottom-half of the frame when Richmond pushed a run across on a double-play ball.

In the fourth, Richmond sent 10 batters to the plate and scored five times to take a 6-2 lead. In that frame, redshirt-sophomore Ethan Hennessy came on in relief of Canisius starter Justin Guiliano, who ended up allowing six runs on six hits to go with a strikeout and three walks. Hennessy went 4.0 innings and allowed six runs, four earned, on seven hits while fanning four.

Canisius had six hits in the loss to Richmond, with Dick and Kush each recording a double in the losing cause. Richmond's Brock Weirather earned his first win of the season on the hill after he allowed just two runs on five hits to go with four strikeouts in 5.1 innings of work.

Game Two Recap
Trailing 2-0 heading into the eighth, Canisius scored twice to knot the game against West Virginia at 2-2. Canisius' first run came on an RBI-single off the bat of redshirt-sophomore Josh Niles, which allowed junior Max Grant to score from second base. Niles advanced to third base on a failed pick-off attempt by West Virginia reliever David Hagaman, and he scored moments later when Hagaman threw a wild pitch.

In the bottom-half of the eighth, the Mountaineers (6-3) took the lead for good on Leonard's RBI-single. Canisius attempted a rally in the ninth, and had runners on the corners with one out, but WVU reliever Carlson Reed got out of the potential jam by getting a double-play ball to end the contest.

Aidan Major picked up his first win of the season in relief for West Virginia, and Reed earned his first career save in the victory. Canisius' starter Matt Duffy pitched to his second no decision after he went 6.1 innings where he allowed two runs on three hits while fanning six and walking two. Graduate student Brett Kochanski took the loss in relief after he gave up a run on two hits while striking out three and walking one.

Dodson recorded a pair of doubles in the loss, as the Griffs posted 11 hits off West Virginia's pitching staff. Grant, Niles and senior Brennan Chisholm each recorded multiple hits in the game, while senior Ryan Weiss added a double on the day as well.
