William & Mary Defeats Baseball Sunday Afternoon

Canisius graduate Kyle Kush hit a two-run home run in the second inning, but it was not enough as William & Mary scored five unanswered runs to defeat the Golden Griffins, 5-3, Sunday afternoon in collegiate baseball action from Williamsburg, Va., on the final day of the Central Virginia Classic.

Sophomore Aaron Duffy tossed 4.0 innings for Canisius (2-5) while William & Mary relievers Zach Tsakounis and Cory Walls combined to toss 7.0 shutout innings (7-5), holding the Griffs to just three hits and one free pass over the final seven frames.

Senior Mike DeStefano led off the game with a walk before advancing to third on a failed pickoff attempt by Tribe starter Tom Mayer.

Fellow fourth year Kenny Dodson brought home DeStefano courtesy of a sac fly.

The Griffs added to their lead in the second, as sophomore Cole Sebastian worked a one-out walk.

Two batters later, Kush crushed a pitch over the right field wall, giving Canisius the 3-0 advantage.

William & Mary got on the scoreboard in the bottom half of the frame after Cole Ragone and Corey Adams collected doubles in two of the first three at-bats in the inning.

With a pair of runners in scoring position, Noah Zertuche put the ball into play. The Canisius infielder attempted to get the out at the plate, but Ragone slid in safely before the tag was applied.

The Tribe cut the deficit to one with a run in the third and later took the lead with a three-run fifth inning.

With the first three runners reaching base, Canisius reliever Felix Morin threw a wild pitch, allowing Lucas Carmichael to trot home to knot the game at three.

Following a pair of outs, Tank Yaghoubi bunted to Morin, who bobbled the ball, giving The Tribe the lead.

Adams added an insurance marker with a single to the left center gap, plating Carmichael. Yaghoubi attempted to score all the way from first, but was gunned down on the relay from junior Max Grant to junior backstop Ty Wevers.

Duffy suffered his first loss of the season while Morin appeared in his first game out of the bullpen for Canisius.

The freshman threw four innings, yielding an unearned run on two hits and two walks while fanning three batters.

Game Notes
• Kush collected his second multi-hit performance of the season and 20th of his college career. This was his 10th multi-RBI game in his five years as a Griff.
• Duffy tied his career-high with six strikeouts, which he has now done three times in his collegiate career. The four innings against William & Mary were the least amount of frames amongst the six-strikeout contests.
• Morin has thrown 4.0 innings in both of his appearances this season.
• DeStefano recorded his third outfield assist of the season. The senior had nine assists in 54 contests in 2022.
